These people all were accused of witchcraft in the early 1690s in the Salem witch trials. Giles Corey’s death was especially gruesome, as he was tortured to death by pressing as he refused to enter a plea. In fact, the nature of Corey’s death may have led some Salem residents to rethink their support. Many of the descendants of the wrongfully accused, including Corey’s descendants, received compensation from the 1711 bill.
