It’s Monday, March 22, 2021, the start of a new week on Jeopardy!. Katie Couric’s 10 episodes raised $230,504 for Stand Up to Cancer. Now, Dr. Oz takes the reins for two weeks. Unfortunately, his episodes taped before the fan base (and many former contestants) were able to express their extreme displeasure towards the move. Healthcorps, Inc. is Dr. Oz’s selected charity, and I’m sure he’ll talk more about it during his hosting stint. That said, I know that a lot of fans are going to boycott these episodes. Heck, I wish I could. To me, his support for conversion therapy has arguably led to lives being lost, is unconscionable, and shows a lack of understanding towards the LGBTQIA+ community. On that note, here’s today’s Final Jeopardy:
Shakespearean References: This name given to U.K. labor strife in Dec. 1978 & Jan. 1979 was taken from the first line of a Shakespeare history play
(correct response beneath the contestants)
The Jeopardy! community is mourning the loss of Brayden Smith, who passed away on February 5. The Brayden Smith Memorial Fund has been established, dedicated to furthering the educational aspirations of Southern Nevada students.
Today’s contestants:
David Eadington, an operations manager from Long Beach, California![]() |
Kathryn Peters, a research center executive director from Carrboro, North Carolina![]() |
Nick Cascone, an orthopedic physician assistant originally from Queens, New York (1-day total: $26,801)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Nick was very strong on Friday, but his opposition today is very strong. An opponent with past quiz bowl experience are always going to give a returning champion a hard time. Nick’s saving grace might be the fact that he was so strong on the signalling device on Friday. If he loses that, though, he’s going to find himself in trouble.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to abide by physical distancing guidelines and when you are not able to do so, properly wear a mask. Ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: What is The Winter of Discontent?
More information about Final Jeopardy: (The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2021 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
“The Winter of Discontent” comes from the first line of Shakespeare’s Richard III; the late-70s event was given its name in a May 1979 Sun editorial. On the surface, public sector trade unions wished a greater pay raise than the government was offering (private sector unions around the same period had received significantly larger pay raises, for the record), and James Callaghan’s inability to effectively deal with the issues (at one point, he made front page news with “Crisis? What crisis?”) directly led to Margaret Thatcher’s election as Prime Minister. Thatcher became incredibly well-known for her anti-labor policies in the 1980s.
On a more Jeopardy! end of things, I haven’t seen the episode yet, and I don’t know if the judges are going to take “Winter of our discontent”. I can see why they would, and I could also see why they wouldn’t. (On an unrelated note, “Winter of our Discontent” could certainly be used to describe how many fans and former contestants feel about our current guest host.)

Andy’s Thoughts:
- With no basketball games on CBS tomorrow, the schedule returns to normal.
- I’m glad that the judges took Kathryn’s response; I could have seen them going the other way, but it would have been incredibly persnickety of them to do so.
- As I said in my Pregame Thoughts, past quiz bowl experiences generally will translate over well to Jeopardy! – at least in terms of knowledge base.
- Thus far, $23,001 has been donated to Healthcorps, Inc.

I will be taking a break from J! while the great and wonderful OZ is hosting. I agree completely with Andy’s reason, but that’s just the tip of an awful iceberg.
Love the show – will watch with the sound off.
Which opponent has quiz bowl experience?
After Alex Trebek, almost anyone will be found to be lacking as a Jeopardy! host. I will refuse to watch any episodes hosted by Anderson Cooper. I am not a fan of his confrontational, argumentative brand of journalism.
Jasper
I’m too much of a fan of Jeopardy! not to watch it no matter who is hosting it.
Good FJ answer today. Requires just a moderate knowledge of Shakespeare, as this opening line to Richard III is so famous. I love it when only one player gets it right.
Perhaps Watson should host. He seems apolitical.
It will be interesting to see how the viewership will change during Dr. Oz’s tenure as guest host. A lot of negativity with him hosting from Jeopardy fans. How many will not watch and how many viewers will watch who don’t normally? Some will probably watch to see if a train wreck occurs. Of course, many Jeopardy fans will watch because they love the show no matter who is hosting.
I haven’t seen any ratings reports of the show since Mike Richards’ tenure ended. I’m curious to see how viewers responded to Katie Couric. I found her to be a little robotic at times, and she injected unnecessary personal inference. She showed improvement in her second week, however.
Dr. Oz is a completely different story. In his case, I mute my TV with the captions on.
great FJ question………… I love the idea of linking 2 concepts….
Katie Couric was phenomenal…. let’s just make her the host if she wants it……. I read, somewhat surprisingly, that her critical comment on DJT might harm her chances of being permanent host. surprises me, although I guess the show demographics are fairly old.. I will say that I can’t think of one well-read, knowledgeable person I know who likes DJT. they might have voted for him, but that would anti-progressive and/or support republicans.
lastly, anyone else have streaks of getting 4 of 5 FJ’s in a row and then getting 1 of 7 FJ’s in a row… happens to me a lot, it seems
I just finished watching the first appearance of Dr.Oz as guest host. As long as you turn off the sound and look away at the beginning, player introductions and end, it’s bearable.
Will not be watching for the next 2 weeks.
These 2 weeks could have been eradicated and on to the next guest host.
Alex I miss you
NO OZ
Eradicated? Returning champions make that nigh on impossible.
I, for one, am glad that today’s episode wasn’t aired locally because of NCAA basketball. It means I’m only going to missing 9 aired shows instead of 10.
Andy, with all due respect, I don’t think your criticism of the host-I-shall-not-name goes far enough. Yes, his support of conversion therapy is horrendously dangerous–but singling it out as if it’s his only flaw isn’t doing justice to the harm his lunacy has done in other areas, such as weight loss treatments, cancer prevention, and his complete disregard for the potential harms and risks of all sorts of “treatments” he has covered on his show.
Concentrating only on what he has done to the LBGT community may lead some to think, “So long as I’m not in that community, and don’t follow anything he said which was specific to that community, I’ll be fine.” And that simply couldn’t be farther from the truth.
I have to admit I knew next to nothing about Dr. Oz and haven’t ever seen his show. That said, he’s a game show host for two weeks. He’s not the nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Still, the fact that’s he even here at all is quite contradictory for a show that is supposed to celebrate knowledge and facts, first and foremost.
