Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, May 14, 2021

Happy Friday! Today is Bill Whitaker’s final day guest hosting; the Media Fellowship House has been the recipient of $235,398 thus far. Buzzy Cohen will be hosting the Tournament of Champions beginning Monday. Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category World Capitals) for Friday, May 14, 2021 (Season 37, Game 165):

A national capital for less than 100 years, it’s the westernmost capital in mainland Asia

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Kristen Crowe, an online journalist originally from Fargo, North Dakota
Kristen Crowe on Jeopardy!
Justin Williams, a land use attorney from Baltimore, Maryland
Justin Williams on Jeopardy!
Amanda Ganske, a product marketing manager from Austin, Texas (2-day total: $33,599)
Amanda Ganske on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: In this final game before the Tournament of Champions, Amanda picked up a second win yesterday after an opponent’s Final Jeopardy! response was justly ruled incorrect by the judges; Amanda was in a distant third place when the Houston broadcast resumed 7 clues into the second round. She’ll need to play a more consistent game today in order to pull out a victory today.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

More information about Final Jeopardy: (The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2021 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Ankara, Turkey, located at 32°51′E, is much farther west than Amman, Jordan, located at 35°56′E. Located on the Anatolian Peninsula (the westernmost part of mainland Asia), it has served as the capital of Turkey since October 1923. Please note that I have specifically mentioned Amman here as the Google search result that mentions Amman under “westernmost capital in Asia” is clearly incorrect.

Historically, the city has been named Angora, which gives its name to the famed Angora wool (from Angora rabbits) and Angora goats (the source of mohair).

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • A total of $257,998 was raised for Media Fellowship House. $1,250,125 has been raised in total for all charities thus far.
  • With regard to the first Daily Double: it appears as though the judges ruled the possessive “Poor’s” as equivalent to the person “Poor”. Fortunately, though, regardless of which side you might take in this debate: it had no bearing on the final result of the game.

  1. I was thinking Tel Aviv in Israel since it was given statehood in 1948, so less than 100 years ago, and it is part of mainland Asia.

  2. I guessed Ankara, because Turkey is partly in Europe. Didn’t know that fact about Angora. Thanks for adding that!

  3. James Cardillo | May 14, 2021 at 10:21 am |

My guess was Kiev, Ukraine. But after seeing the answer, I now see that Ukraine is one of the former USSR republics that is in Europe.

  4. Timely Bennifer clue today hehe.

  5. Amanda really didn’t have much competition today. It will be nice for her to come back in 2 weeks all refreshed – with $53K. 😊

    Good bye, Bill.

    HEL-LO-O-O BUZZY❗❗❗

    • If Kristen had gotten her first daily double missing what I thought was an easy question, she would have gotten $6,800 instead of losing $3,400. She did get her second daily double right but we don’t know what she would have bet but she would have had $16,000 at Final Jeopardy if she kept the bet the same. Judging by her betting on Final Jeopardy to secure second place as first was out of reach she would have bet enough to force Amanda to get the final right. As Kristen got it right and Amanda missed it, Kristen would have won. A single clue can have a huge impact on who wins.

  6. great question…. I was thinking major change in last 100 years = Syria/Jordan/Israel … I went with Amman over Damascus and forgot about Tel Aviv/Jerusalem (?)….. so Amman has at least 3 capitals ahead of it. Ankara, Beirut, Israel capital…. why did Turkey move its capital? sounds vaguely junior high social studies

I thought Whitaker did a nice job.

  8. I thought Whitaker did an adequate job at best.

  9. I think Whitaker is not who we want as the permanent Jeopardy host.

  10. Regarding the last DJ! clue, I wonder why Kristen didn’t take a wild guess at it. Getting that money was her only chance at breaking the runaway, so there’s nothing to lose from a shot in the dark.

    • If she had bet it all, it would have given her an additional $1,600 and would have prevented a runaway. However, at the time, that put her at $6,400 and Amanda at $9,400. Amanda was on fire after that and turned it into a runaway.

I hate questions where you have to try and figure out, “Is that Asia,…or Europe…?!? So I picked Tokyo in protest…I knew it hadn’t been capital for THAT much more than 100 years…(1868)

  12. Goodbye boring Whitaker, ZZZZ. Welcome, BUZZY! He’s my choice for permanent successor to Alex – When he played, he told Alex in Q+A he wanted his job before anyone knew Alex was ill – Alex laughed and said he wasn’t going anywhere. Let’s see how BUZZY does, and was he only kidding about wanting the job??? ….. I’m looking forward to next week, and am rooting for MacKenzie Jones…. Great name, great player… First cousin to Stupefyin’ Jones???
