Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, August 10, 2021

Today is Day #2 of Joe Buck’s hosting stint! Yesterday, $13,400 of winnings was matched for Kidsmart. Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Fictional Places) for Tuesday, August 10, 2021 (Season 37, Game 227):

A savage people called Zapoletes are contrasted with the inhabitants of the title place of this 16th-century work

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Silpa Kovvali, a screenwriter from Los Angeles, California
Silpa Kovvali on Jeopardy!
Allie Lane, a technical editor from Rochester, New Hampshire
Allie Lane on Jeopardy!
Matt Amodio, a Ph.D student from New Haven, Connecticut (14-day total: $440,600)
Matt Amodio on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Matt Amodio moved to #4 on the all-time regular play money winnings list yesterday. Let’s look back to what I said going into his second game on July 22: “Matt knocked off a strong 3-day champion in Josh Saak yesterday, aided greatly by picking off 7 clues off the bottom of the board and another 5 off the fourth row. That sort of wide, deep knowledge is going to be difficult to beat.” Doing well on bottom of the board clues can be incredibly predictive of sustained success, as those are the most likely clues that only one of the three players knows the correct response to. Combine that with Matt’s dominance on the signalling device and you have the building blocks for a very long streak that does not show signs of stopping.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Utopia was a work, published in 1516, by English polymath Thomas More; the word “Utopia” is now used to describe an imaginary community that has near-perfect qualities of its citizens.

Later in life, More became famous for opposing the divorce of Henry VIII and opposing the English break from the Catholic church; considering that one of the ideals in More’s Utopia was “easy divorce”, this ironic real-life about-face certainly led to More’s treason conviction and execution in 1535.

  1. It’s amazing to me that Brad Rutter won almost $4.7 million overall, but didn’t even get to $300K in regular play winnings, and isn’t even in the top 10. I know dollar values were lesser then, but still……
