Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 1970s Songs) for Tuesday, November 9, 2021 (Season 38, Game 42):
In 1976 “Bohemian Rhapsody” was replaced at No. 1 on the U.K. charts by this Europop song whose title is heard in Queen’s lyrics
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s contestants:
Hillary Sebeny, a historian from Honolulu, Hawaii
|
Greg Zona, a principal from West Grove, Pennsylvania
|
Dane Reighard, an editor from Los Angeles, California (1-day total: $28,000)
|
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Dane picked up his first victory in yesterday’s game. One thing that astute challengers should have picked up on, though: he only bet to tie Elena’s doubled score in Final Jeopardy!, leaving him open to a potential tiebreaker. If Dane’s run (and this strategy) continues, you might see second-placed players be more likely to bet everything.
One thing that surprised me yesterday is the number of fans who were surprised that Ken was hosting (and not Mayim). Both the show and the media reported that there were going to be two hosts for the first few months of the season. I’m not sure what else the show could do here.
One further thing that bothers me about some of the fans: when they say that they are “voting” for a certain person to be host. I would like to make one thing clear: there is no host vote. Implying that you are voting for someone implies an agency into the process that you do not have and are not intended to have at this point.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: What is “Mamma Mia”? (by ABBA)

This exact question made the rounds in trivia circles in the last six months—I definitely saw it on my Facebook at some point. It’s certainly a great “fun fact” question. The requisite line from the Queen song: “Oh mamma mia, mamma mia, mamma mia, let me go /
Beelzebub, has a devil put aside for me, for me, for me?”. The ABBA song went to #1 in the UK in January 1976 (and was from the group’s self-titled third studio album.)

Today’s interviews:
Hillary investigates World War II cold cases of people whose bodies weren’t recovered during the war.
Greg has been to three World Series as a Phillies fan.
Dane was an extra in Yo Gabba Gabba.
Andy’s Thoughts:
- On the final Daily Double, the show’s rules and procedures were absolutely followed. The show’s rules are very clear on this point: Contestants may change their responses as long as neither the host or the judges have made a ruling. Thus, Hillary was very much allowed to change her response from “hedge farm” to “hedge fund” before Ken and the judges made their ruling.
- I still don’t quite understand Dane’s betting strategy. (There seems to be some sort of strategy there, but I’ve yet to figure it out.)

Speaking of hosts, Jeopardy dodged a huge bullet when it passed on Aaron Rodgers, who campaigned as hard as he could for the job. As both James Holzhauer and Matt Amodio have pointed out, Rodgers presumably lied to Jeopardy as well about his (non)vaccination status. After the long-running debacle of the Mike Richards era, just imagine how much egg would be on the show’s face if it had announced Rodgers as the new host.
I’m guessing at this point they’ll stick with mayim and ken rotating seems to work so they’ll likely keep it this way
I saw it stated on twitter that Rodgers taped shows before vaccinations were widely available, and thus it was a moot point at the time.
I love the new art in the Jeopardy Fan Logo. Looks great.
Thank you!
And, after people get used to the new logo, maybe change the “what” to “who” just to see who notices, and who gets the “inside joke”. and either response would be valid.
Or change the “What is” to “What’s” a la Matt Amodio.
Mamma Mia was something that came to me the moment Abba came up. Although I haven’t listened to that many songs from the 1970s for such a long time now but I am hoping to find Abba on a dvd or a cd hopefully soon. I wish dane would not have to bet anything and he would still win either way. I think tomorrow will make Dane have a comeback and give him a chance to keep his winning streak alive.
Fun fact, and I actually passed over that section of lyrics when trying to solve it! That’s embarrassing. While we’re on the topic, and since nobody asked, the only #1 US hit to repeat the same word four times in its title? (Shake Shake Shake) Shake Your Booty by KC and the Sunshine Band.
Re: “voting” for a host, surely the commentariat realizes that they’ve had little to no agency in this process since the start? Seems like a pretty minor thing to comment on, but I don’t have to wade into the Twitter morass for a living.
I’ve said before that I don’t like Mayim, but she’s been fine as host. It is nice to see a woman up there. What a pleasure having Ken back, though. If he continues to fill in while Mayim is working on her sitcom, I could live with that.
I think it is amazing and entertaining that Dane got the Europop group right but chose another song rather than their song most widely associated with them. I wonder if “Bohemian” made him try to think of something else associated with “the continent” [where the Battle of Waterloo took place].
I think it’s more likely that the similarity of the terms “Europop” and “Eurovision” led him to choose “Waterloo”. He was probably aware that “Waterloo” was the song that won Abba the 1974 Eurovision contest and propelled them to worldwide fame.
I did not know that. I bet you are right!
“Mamma Mia” only went to #32 in the US. Obviously the title is famous because of the musical play/movies, but as songs “Waterloo” and “Dancing Queen” are much more well known here.
Mamma Mia came to me about 20 seconds in, but it’s a lot easier from the couch than up there with the music counting down. No rhyme or reason to Dane’s FJ betting.
I thought this question was extremely difficult. I didn’t think it through, so I was thinking of “Rock Me, Amadeus.” I knew, however, that that song couldn’t be right, because it was much later in time. Furthermore, the line-word by Queen was only “Amadeus.”
Apparently, I’ve been banned from commenting because I pointed out an error by Andy yesterday. I got the message the post already been sent when I tried to post about today’s program.
Well, heck , obviously not. I should’ve thought that of Andy. And it wasn’t major criticism. But I WAS getting the message that my post had already been displayed when it wasn’t. Maybe I’ll try again later. Thanks Andy. You really do an incredible job. I’d like to meet you sometime, but that’s probably impossible. I’m a retired lawyer come and have a law degree from Harvard from way back when. Interestingly, my best friend in law school was on “Jeopardy!” in about 1990, and was champion for three days in a row. I always thought his answer to “Final Jeopardy” the day he lost was actually correct.
We were on the trivia team our third and last year in law school, and our three-person team won.
Perhaps this is too personal, and it won’t be posted, but I’ll tell you how we won, because I think fans who post on here might find it interesting.
The question we won on was, “What is the capital of Malawi?” I answered “Lilongwe.” It had only recently been made the capital, and my answer was ruled incorrect. I persisted, so an intermission was called to look up the correct answer, the decision was reversed, and we won on that!
About the “hedge farm/fund” answer — thanks for clarifying about the rule. But I was a bit surprised that the answer wasn’t quickly declared wrong as soon as she gave the first answer, instead of letting it hang for several seconds as Ken stared in the direction of the judges.
Is there a reason that Mayim was introduced as “the host of Jeopardy” and Ken was introduced as “hosting Jeopardy”? Thanks.
