Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, January 25, 2022

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Sea Life) for Tuesday, January 25, 2022 (Season 38, Game 97):

In 2018 National Geographic reported that half of this was dead, “akin to a forest after a devastating fire”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Maria Krasinski, a managing director & illustrator from Buffalo, New York
Maria Krasinski on Jeopardy!
John Williams, a biology professor from Albany, Georgia
John Williams on Jeopardy!
Amy Schneider, an engineering manager from Oakland, California (39-day total: $1,319,800)
Amy Schneider on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Yesterday, Amy Schneider won her 39th game, passing Matt Amodio for the 2nd-longest streak of all time. She’s still 35 wins from passing Ken Jennings, though. We’re at the point of the streak where most of the analysts know that it’s going to take an unlucky set of circumstances for Amy to lose. I don’t really think anyone can truly pinpoint what specific day it will happen on, but I know that some analysts are starting to worry about Amy’s diminishing record in Final Jeopardy!—which will certainly make things easier for her opponents if Amy gets into a situation where she doesn’t have a runaway game.

On a more personal note, I mentioned last Friday that a Canadian game show that I wrote for last summer, Pop Whiz, premiered this weekend on Game TV here in Canada. If you didn’t get a chance to watch it, episodes are available on Game TV’s website to watch. It’s a pop culture-based travelling game show where the production tapes in various small- to medium-sized cities throughout Canada, and local teenagers compete to win cash prizes.

Today is the seventh day of the JEOPARDY! Explore Alaska Sweepstakes. Winners will discover iconic, wild Alaska on an expedition aboard one of Lindblad’s 100-guest sister ships, National Geographic Quest or National Geographic Venture, accompanied by a team of naturalists, certified photo instructors, an undersea specialist and a wellness instructor.

To enter the JEOPARDY! Explore Alaska Sweepstakes, viewers are invited to tune-in to JEOPARDY! every weekday and enter the daily Final Jeopardy! category (today’s is Sea Life) on the sweepstakes entry webpage, sweepstakes.jeopardy.com. Then, they will be entered for a chance to win an expedition for two exploring authentic Alaskan coastal wilderness from the unique vantage of a small ship. Each winner and their guest will receive round-trip coach-class air transportation from the winner’s closest major gateway airport, $1,000 US spending cash, as well as all shipboard accommodations, meals (excluding alcoholic beverages), and activities for travel valid in 2022 or 2023.

I would also like to remind the readers that the above information is provided in order to be helpful to readers. This is just a fan site; I have no way of troubleshooting any potential issues that may arise. One thing, though: you have to enter the category before 11:59 PM Pacific Time each day.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

The National Geographic article from 2018 was titled Half of the Great Barrier Reef is Dead. Basically, rising ocean temperatures due to climate change is stunting the growth of the coral in the famed reef off the northeast coast of Australia.

John prefers to watch Jeopardy! with his 3-year-old daughter.
Amy is worried about more pressure on her during the Tournament of Champions.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Kudos to the writers for their SEE LIFE in the first round / “C” LIFE in the second / SEA LIFE in Final theme. It’s very rare for the show to string a theme through all three rounds.
  • Amy’s weakest day of the week throughout her run has been Wednesday.
  • Maria’s book is titled Art Hiding in New York: An Illustrated Guide to the City’s Secret Masterpieces”.
  • With 1,309 total, Amy passes Matt Amodio (1,305) for #3 all-time in terms of number of correct responses given on the show.
  • Both the $32,000 Coryat and $63,000 final total will make it onto our list of top Coryat scores and top final totals.

    Easy FJ.

  2. this is easier than most final jeopardy questions.I got this right due to the fact that i read national geographic on a regular basis.

  3. Here’s my predictions for the 2022 ToC!

Finalists: Matt Amodio, Amy Schneider, Andrew He

Amy: One thing I think will bode well for her when facing Matt is that she doesn’t have as many incorrect clues as Matt. I think STAYING CLAM is one of the most important things that a champion can do. The one thing that concerns me slightly is her Final record; if a Final comes up and she bets a lot but gets it wrong, it could be curtains.

Matt: While Amy is better at avoiding incorrect responses, I feel like Matt’s aggressiveness will translate better to the big stage. Additionally, his buzz in rate is higher and his Final rate is higher; going off these stats makes him, I believe, a slight favorite in the tournament.

Andrew: Time and time again, Andrew has shown that he isn’t afraid to bet big when he needs to. He also has the advantage of already having played Amy, so he knows how she plays. However, if a Daily Double goes wrong he could be in big trouble, and that combined with everything else makes him the least likely to win in my opinion.

Final Prediction: Amy and Andrew give Matt a run for his money, but Matt manages to squeak out a win and bags the $250,000; Amy barely beats out Andrew for second and collects the $100,000, and Andrew finishes in a close to third and gets $50,000.

Do you agree? Or am I way off base? Let me know!

    • Well considering there will be 15 players, many of which we haven’t seen yet, I think you’re jumping the gun on your prediction 🙂

Well, when you’ve got the likes of Brian Chang, Courtney Shah and Zach Newkirk, each of whom will have been preparing for at least one full year in advance of the next TOC, I wouldn’t sleep on any of their chances. The only negative for each of these three will be the amount of time they’ve spent away from that stage, and how quickly they’ll be able to regain that very important buzzer timing.

  4. Very easy FJ. Then again, the great majority have been relatively easy as of late, yet 3/3 seems to occur less frequently.

  5. Amy’s struggles with the Finals lately could be a problem in the TOC, where other players would have enough buzzer speed to at least stay in contention. Many of the other TOC contenders could also have enough self-confidence to go all in if they find the Daily Doubles, and put Amy in the unusual position of having to come from behind. There could be an upset in the semifinals, the round most resembling a regular game.

Things just keep going up and up for this lady, I’m super impressed.

For the Tournament of Champions prediction… most likely Amy and Matt would be the two finalists.

  7. jeopardyfansteve | January 25, 2022 at 2:00 pm |

Amy has struggled recently on final Jeopardy! questions, but prior to that she was doing very well. I also feel that recent final questions seem to be more difficult and many of the other contestants are getting it wrong too. She will have to probably change her strategy in the TOC…specifically wagering more in daily doubles where she has been quite conservative. Go Amy!!

  8. Pam Schultz | January 25, 2022 at 2:01 pm |

I don’t think that Amy will lose in a fj situation because she is careful with her math. I think opponents need to get to her in dj so she doesn’t have a math advantage, that being said..,go Amy keep winning

    • As long as Amy has runaway games, she doesn’t need to care about FJ. She did well today but has actually missed out on over $100,000 because of big bets on FJ that were incorrect.

Amy has a big advantage because she is used to the Jeopardy studio and using the buzzer. Her array of knowledge is so vast that she is hard to beat.

The only way she might lose is if she has a game that is not a runaway, she misses the FJ clue and her closest opponent gets it right.

The most important thing is to keep having runaways.

  9. I doubt amy will lose in a FJ situation, but given how easy this final is, geography has been my favorite subject so far. Amy should keep winning despite having a few incorrect fj responses so far. But still this won’t hurt her in the long run. I am impressed at how far she has reached.

For the first time, I truly believe Amy will beat Ken’s streak.

    • That does seem possible, but I will truly believe it when her “Avg. streak” shows a number that is greater than 74.

  11. Not that it is any of my business, sure would like to know how much money she has list in FJ. It’s a lot but I so admire her confidence and willingness to gamble now and then. Such a huge fan…….go Amy

  12. would coral also be a correct answer? wiki says about 1/2 of the world coral has been lost over the last 30 years. or does the National Geographic reference eliminate it?

    • I thought the “a forest” after “a” fire part of the clue limited it to a single specific location. That’s why I immediately changed my first thought of “coral” to “The Great Barrier Reef”.
