Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, January 26, 2022

It’s Wednesday, my friends! Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Countries of the World) for Wednesday, January 26, 2022 (Season 38, Game 98):

The only nation in the world whose name in English ends in an H, it’s also one of the 10 most populous

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Rhone Talsma, a librarian from Chicago, Illinois
Rhone Talsma on Jeopardy!
Janice Hawthorne Timm, a music educator & choral director from Ukiah, California
Janice Hawthorne Timm on Jeopardy!
Amy Schneider, an engineering manager from Oakland, California (40-day total: $1,382,800)
Amy Schneider on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Amy Schneider, yesterday, became only the second player in the history of Jeopardy! to win 40 games. She goes for number 41 today. As I mentioned on CBC Toronto yesterday, though, when your streak reaches these heights, it’s going to be a matter of “when does the unlucky set of circumstances strike?” Jeopardy! has variance baked into its format, especially due to the Daily Doubles and Final Jeopardy. Ken, Matt, and James all had an unlucky set of circumstances (in some form or another) to cause their defeat. It’s going to happen at some point with Amy as well.

Today is also the eighth day of the JEOPARDY! Explore Alaska Sweepstakes. Winners will discover iconic, wild Alaska on an expedition aboard one of Lindblad’s 100-guest sister ships, National Geographic Quest or National Geographic Venture, accompanied by a team of naturalists, certified photo instructors, an undersea specialist and a wellness instructor.

To enter the JEOPARDY! Explore Alaska Sweepstakes, viewers are invited to tune-in to JEOPARDY! every weekday and enter the daily Final Jeopardy! category (today’s is Countries of the World) on the sweepstakes entry webpage, sweepstakes.jeopardy.com. Then, they will be entered for a chance to win an expedition for two exploring authentic Alaskan coastal wilderness from the unique vantage of a small ship. Each winner and their guest will receive round-trip coach-class air transportation from the winner’s closest major gateway airport, $1,000 US spending cash, as well as all shipboard accommodations, meals (excluding alcoholic beverages), and activities for travel valid in 2022 or 2023.

I would also like to remind the readers that the above information is provided in order to be helpful to readers. This is just a fan site; I have no way of troubleshooting any potential issues that may arise. One thing, though: you have to enter the category before 11:59 PM Pacific Time each day.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: What is Bangladesh?

Did you know that you can now find game-by-game stats of everyone, now including Matt Amodio, Jonathan Fisher, and Amy Schneider, who has won 10 or more games on Jeopardy!, here on the site?

More information about Final Jeopardy: (The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2022 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Bangladesh, located east of India, is the world’s 8th-most populous country. It’s also the most populous country in the world never to have won an Olympic medal. I think that this is a relatively straightforward clue for anyone who knows what the most populous countries in the world are; however, this is also a clue that could potentially trip someone up if they get lost trying to think of too many populous countries. It will be interesting to see how it plays.

Today’s interviews:
Rhone taught an online dating class for senior citizens at his library.
Janice owns a 1928 Steinway grand piano that was owned by a Nobel Prize winner.
Amy has been taught by her girlfriend Genevieve about pop culture.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Amy joins Matt Jackson, Seth Wilson, and Arthur Chu as the fourth player to win 10 or more games and lose on a Wednesday.
  • $27,600 is the fifth-highest score going into Final Jeopardy! (since dollar values were doubled in 2001) that ended up not winning the game.
  • Amy mentioned yesterday on Twitter that the lunch break at taping took place between yesterday’s and today’s games. I would hesitate to blame that for Amy’s defeat; 28 correct is still a very strong performance. Viewers are also reminded that, as I said this morning, variance is a thing very much baked into Jeopardy!’s format. It’s a game more like Scrabble than it is chess. Unlucky games can (and will) happen. And Amy just got unlucky today that Rhone found the last Daily Double before she did.

  1. The last two “giant killers” (Emma & Jonathan Fisher) both became worthy champions in their own right. Hopefully, the same holds true with Rhone!

The TOC with Matt and Amy, along with Andrew He, Brian Chang, Jonathan, and a host of other strong champs probably will be the best ever!

  2. Really? My comment of “Congrats Rhone” isn’t getting posted? Why not?

I guess I will have to congratulate my friend via a text since I can’t do it here.

    • The Site Comment Policy clearly states that comments are often placed in moderation. This is especially the case if one does not have a previously-approved comment. This is becomes oftentimes, we get drive-by commenters who just want to post hateful things about contestants. Thus, manual approval is often required.

blink Wow This one seemed so easy to me. Literally, Bangladesh was the first thing I thought of. I am surprised that only Rhone got it.
I thought I remembered Bangladesh being in a more recent clue, but a search shows the last use was back in August when Matt was playing.

Rhone made a little miscalculation in his FJ wager (assuming he wanted to ensure 2nd Place), since Janice could have passed him if he was wrong and she was right. The safe wager range would have been $10,001 to $11,199.

  4. This was too easy for me because bangladesh was the first one that came to my mind but surprised Rhone Got it. This is the second librarian from Chicago to become a giant killer after Emma Boettcher. So now we shall see if Rhone can actually get a streak of his own going. Welcome to the tournament of Champions Amy! 40 games won is a new record. We also hope to see Amy and Matt on the chase as well

  5. I quickly answered this one and was positive Amy would as well, she has been strong in geography. Oh well. Sad to see Amy leave, I was enjoying watching her every day, but the ToC will be a must-see this season. Congrats to Amy and Rhone!

    • Totally agree. If I can get it (I did) I would expect them all to nail it. But then forty days and forty nights is a historic run. Looking forward to this year’s TOC and eventually hoping for a Matt, James, and Amy special. And then a Watson, Siri, Alexa shootout.

    • Actually, it seems like she’s missed a lot of travel type questions, so I thought she might have trouble with this FJ.

  6. Glad that all the money Amy left on the board on DD2 didn’t end up being the difference.

A shame to see her go, but what a performance! Bring on the next ultra-champ!

  7. Crazy the streak is over. Had a feeling her sting of FJ incorrect responses was going to catch up with her, though in a game was first on the buzzer 49% of time, had 12 more correct responses than Rhone and more than both combined, and only had 1 incorrect? That randomness of the DD certainly did it to get Rhone close enough (his only choice sure, though after missing an all-in earlier took nerves of steel).

Rhone also looks like is at 3rd podium (has not aired in my market yet – can’t watch tonight thus why checked early), which besides librarian from Chicago is also the spot Emma was in and James had to go down to high-five her. Spooky. Congrats to Amy on her long run and see her again in the greatest TOC of all-time.

  8. This one came to me right away. As soon as I saw “H,” Bangladesh just popped in my head. Which I suppose is karma because last night I couldn’t come up with one that was fairly easy, as I kept thinking about the polar ice caps. My wife on the other hand, when I read her the clue, said “Great Barrier Reef” almost before I could finish reading it. It’s amazing how some responses just come to you and others never do if they gave you 30 minutes instead of 30 seconds.

  9. This question was made for my son. That little guy has the top 10 memorized for population and area. Since he is 6 and likes to repeat everything he knows over and over, this was a perfect question for the family. I am sad about the result for this one. 🙁

  10. First of all, I’d like to congratulate Amy on 40 games won, but knew that her time was near due to her FJ misses. It finally caught up to her. And congratulations to Rhone on being the “Giant Killer”. Now we have ten entrants into the next TOC, including John Focht who won only four games. His winnings were $103,800!! Of the current entrants so far, Zack Newkirk has had to wait the longest to get into the future TOC as he was a continuing champ when the season ended I think before Covid-19 hit. I am sure someone out there has the details on that.

In the meantime, with Amy gone, now we need five more 5 day+ champions to qualify for the next TOC as their are ten qualified now.

Actually, Bangladesh came pretty fast to me, probably because i focused more on population which took me to the south and east of Asia, and once i ruled out Indonesia, Bangladesh just sort of sprang to mind.

And, boom, just like that another long run ends! Always a mild surprise to scroll through the list and see a new face, that is different from the one you have gotten used to seeing for the past several weeks. Congrats to Amy. She had a formidable run, and i enjoyed seeing her be surprised sometimes when she got an answer right. A little surprised she did not get this one, but some days are better than others. Yes, let’s see how this Chicago librarian does before we start predicting a new trend. Plus, we can now maybe add a few more names to the Tournament Tracker, and have a tournament in the fall! I think everyone is hoping to see Amy and Matt square off in the Tournament, and hopefully a few more good players can join the mix this season as well.

  12. OMG!! Without that last DD, Rhone could not have pulled this off. As I recall, a few other players tried to catch up to Amy by going all-in on a DD and, lucky for her, they came up goose-egged.

    • Generally the other players know they have to bet big in this circumstance and against a strong champion. Emma did it against James and if she hadn’t she would not have won. She even mentioned that she thinks she would have to bet big while placing the bet.
