It’s Wednesday, my friends! Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Countries of the World) for Wednesday, January 26, 2022 (Season 38, Game 98):
The only nation in the world whose name in English ends in an H, it’s also one of the 10 most populous
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s contestants:
Rhone Talsma, a librarian from Chicago, Illinois![]() |
Janice Hawthorne Timm, a music educator & choral director from Ukiah, California![]() |
Amy Schneider, an engineering manager from Oakland, California (40-day total: $1,382,800)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Amy Schneider, yesterday, became only the second player in the history of Jeopardy! to win 40 games. She goes for number 41 today. As I mentioned on CBC Toronto yesterday, though, when your streak reaches these heights, it’s going to be a matter of “when does the unlucky set of circumstances strike?” Jeopardy! has variance baked into its format, especially due to the Daily Doubles and Final Jeopardy. Ken, Matt, and James all had an unlucky set of circumstances (in some form or another) to cause their defeat. It’s going to happen at some point with Amy as well.
Today is also the eighth day of the JEOPARDY! Explore Alaska Sweepstakes. Winners will discover iconic, wild Alaska on an expedition aboard one of Lindblad’s 100-guest sister ships, National Geographic Quest or National Geographic Venture, accompanied by a team of naturalists, certified photo instructors, an undersea specialist and a wellness instructor.
To enter the JEOPARDY! Explore Alaska Sweepstakes, viewers are invited to tune-in to JEOPARDY! every weekday and enter the daily Final Jeopardy! category (today’s is Countries of the World) on the sweepstakes entry webpage, sweepstakes.jeopardy.com. Then, they will be entered for a chance to win an expedition for two exploring authentic Alaskan coastal wilderness from the unique vantage of a small ship. Each winner and their guest will receive round-trip coach-class air transportation from the winner’s closest major gateway airport, $1,000 US spending cash, as well as all shipboard accommodations, meals (excluding alcoholic beverages), and activities for travel valid in 2022 or 2023.
I would also like to remind the readers that the above information is provided in order to be helpful to readers. This is just a fan site; I have no way of troubleshooting any potential issues that may arise. One thing, though: you have to enter the category before 11:59 PM Pacific Time each day.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: What is Bangladesh?
More information about Final Jeopardy: (The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2022 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
Bangladesh, located east of India, is the world’s 8th-most populous country. It’s also the most populous country in the world never to have won an Olympic medal. I think that this is a relatively straightforward clue for anyone who knows what the most populous countries in the world are; however, this is also a clue that could potentially trip someone up if they get lost trying to think of too many populous countries. It will be interesting to see how it plays.

Today’s interviews:
Rhone taught an online dating class for senior citizens at his library.
Janice owns a 1928 Steinway grand piano that was owned by a Nobel Prize winner.
Amy has been taught by her girlfriend Genevieve about pop culture.
Andy’s Thoughts:
- Amy joins Matt Jackson, Seth Wilson, and Arthur Chu as the fourth player to win 10 or more games and lose on a Wednesday.
- $27,600 is the fifth-highest score going into Final Jeopardy! (since dollar values were doubled in 2001) that ended up not winning the game.
- Amy mentioned yesterday on Twitter that the lunch break at taping took place between yesterday’s and today’s games. I would hesitate to blame that for Amy’s defeat; 28 correct is still a very strong performance. Viewers are also reminded that, as I said this morning, variance is a thing very much baked into Jeopardy!’s format. It’s a game more like Scrabble than it is chess. Unlucky games can (and will) happen. And Amy just got unlucky today that Rhone found the last Daily Double before she did.

For the last 2-3 weeks, Ken has been openly encouraging contestants to be hyper-aggressive, knowing that was the only way to beat Amy. Rhone was lucky enough to have it work out for him. Wish Rhone the best going forward.
I feel terrible for this but I honestly didn’t know Bangladesh was a sovereign country. If you had asked me before the show I would have guessed that it was a territory/province of India.
Alex did the same. I don’t understand why Ken is being criticized for behaviour that Alex did all the time when he was host.
And the players should know that they have to bet big to win. I doubt that Ken’s comments would change their betting strategy.
While on the face of it, Ken’s encouragement seems to be rooting against Amy, I think that at this point it was an acknowledgement of her talent and was really rooting for a good game. Kn
Took me about 7 seconds to pull this out but I spend way too much time on Sporcle so that’s natural.
SHOCKED at the result. Like… when Amy didn’t get it I was like O_O. I was happy that someone was giving her a run for her money for once, but never expected that result. Rhone betting the farm was epic.
Really looking forward to the inevitable Matt Amodio vs. Amy Schneider duel in the TOC!
Now that the shock has worn off… I should probably clarify that I like Amy and think she’s a great champ; it’s just that her dominating everyone the show threw at her was growing old.
I would like to congratulate her on 40 straight games and the second-longest streak ever, plus the fourth-highest total cash in regular play. All great achievements! Again, I’m really looking forward to her and Matt dueling in the TOC. Gonna be one for the ages!
Great run by Amy, and what a wonderful champion. It also shows again how amazing Ken’s run was. After all these years, #2 is still just a little over half what he did. Congrats to Rhone on his terrific play. Hope he can keep it going.
“#2 is still just a little over half what he did”
#3 as well 😉
Did anyone else think that when Amy responded “Manning” to one of the football questions, she should have been required to specify which Manning?
Yes. The correct response should have had to differentiate between Peyton and Eli since their careers overlapped to a great extent.
I agree – and don’t forget their father Archie, who was also an NFL QB with New Orleans
And their brother Cooper
Yeah they should have clarified it but I’m pretty sure she knew the answer. Appears that she knew she botched the Unitas question with Namath.
I agree with Andy that Amy is a great champion, but it is frustrating that all the games seemingly have been runaways. It was good to have some drama in final jeopardy.
Did you see the article by someone about going back to 5 day champions since the champion has a big advantage being comfortable with the buzzer so we see all these runaway games? I don’t agree, but I do like the idea of disadvantaging someone who has one 10+ games. Maybe add 1/10th a second delay to their buzzer.
That would be illegal, Robert.
Oops, I didn’t mean to suggest anything illegal. Just thinking out loud.
The new contestants get to practice their buzzer technique now. That started in 2004.
I know that the last thing Jeopardy! wants to do is make football categories any harder, lest they create another stand and stare YouTube moment, but I was surprised they didn’t require more specificity on the Peyton Manning response.
I agree that with Archie, Peyton and Eli all possible, a contestant should have to specify.
Amy had a GREAT run, but I was getting tired of the constant runnaways. I purposely did not watch two of the last four shows for that reason. What a surprise this show was.
I think it’s not a fluke that Amy lost in a very similar manner to the way she first won against Andrew He. Trailing going into Final Jeopardy but winning with a big bet and a correct answer vs the leader missing FJ answer.
It’s kind of like‘bookends’ to her regular season career. If Rhone becomes a one and done I will be quite disappointed.
I think the “unlucky set of circumstances” that proved to be Amy’s undoing was that she had an off day. I got three of the seven Triple Stumpers and the Final today. During her reign (“e” before “i”), I was lucky to get one or two (mostly zeros!). When mere mortals are playing, I usually get about a third of them. Great run, Amy!
This one came quickly to me. It was a weird one because once you get it, then because of the “only” in the clue then you know you are right — no chance of second-guessing yourself. I fully expected Amy to get it. But indeed, she’s missed quite a few FJs lately and only been protected by repeated insurmountable leads.
I liked Amy just fine but I also was getting bored with every game seeming like a Harlem Globetrotters game. It will be nice to tune in to some competitive games again.
I think this shows how close the margin can be between dominance and defeat–something that holds true for the recent super champs as well as the revolving door of champs we see from time to time. At the end of the day, all you need is just enough to have a chance. Kudos to Rhone for capitalizing on his golden opportunities where many others couldn’t.
Hi, fans. Can someone tell us when Amy’s last show was actually taped? No other reason for this question except respect and curiosity!
If I remember the article I read earlier, Nov 9th 2021.
November 9, 2021.
Thank you both! How has she managed to stay silent in real time about her length of play?! Jeopardy means business when they ask for a code of silence from their champs!
