Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Musical Theater) for Monday, July 11, 2022 (Season 38, Game 216):
It’s one of the most revived shows in Broadway history & in 2001 it was designated the state opera of South Carolina
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s contestants:
Steve Clarke, a lawyer from Chesapeake, Virginia![]() |
Aleithia Stephens, a course developer from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma![]() |
Robert Won, a math professor from Washington, DC (1-day total: $32,001)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
D.C. math professor Robert Won enters Mayim Bialik’s final week of hosting as a 1-day champion and winnings of $32,001. Today’s challengers are Aleithia Stephens and Steve Clarke.
Editorially: In protest of how tabloid entertainment papers are constantly mining Twitter to twist people’s words for their anti-Mayim Bialik hit pieces, I will not be live-tweeting mid-game statistics for this week’s games. However, I will be posting them here on this page for the sake of anyone who might still be interested in them.
On a more personal note: For the past two and a half years, I have often raised money for the MS Society of Canada through their “Gamers vs. MS” program. This July, Gamers vs. MS is running a month-long fundraising campaign called “Boss Battles.” In an attempt to raise $25,000, the Gamers vs. MS team has designed a “fundraising adventure” to defeat eight evil bosses. (Much like a Mario game might have eight bosses to defeat.) You can get more information about the program at https://www.gamersvsms.ca/bossbattles, and if you’d like to donate, you can do so via Tiltify!.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Porgy and Bess is a 1935 George Gershin English-language opera set in Catfish Row in Charleston, South Carolina, based on the DuBose Heyward novel Porgy. Its initial Broadway cast featured classically-trained African-American singers; the opera gained its current popularity following a 1976 Houston Grand Opera performance, and has major American cultural significance. The 1976 (Cleveland), 1977 (Houston), and 2020 (Met Opera) recordings of the opera have all won Grammy Awards for Best Opera Recording.

Game Recap:
Jeopardy! Round:
(Categories: Glaciers; Hearing Red; The Raven-Pourri; License Plate Mottos; Great Britain in the 1700s; Cheery-“O”)
Robert got off to a hot start in today’s game, picking up 8 correct before the interviews. However, Steve got 10 correct himself to pull into the lead at the end of the round! Aleithia struggled a little bit on the signalling device, at least against Robert and Steven.
Statistics after 15 clues:
Robert 8 correct 2 incorrect
Aleithia 3 correct 0 incorrect
Steve 3 correct 2 incorrect
Statistics after 30 clues:
Steve 13 correct 2 incorrect
Robert 12 correct 3 incorrect
Aleithia 4 correct 0 incorrect
Double Jeopardy! Round:
(Categories: Writer, Wronger; Characters in the Movie; Trial & Era; Wood; Geography from Macau to Ogden; Familial Phrases)
Robert had an incredibly strong first half of Double Jeopardy, running FAMILIAL PHRASES and picking up a pair of $5,000 Daily Doubles to jump out to a big lead! However, Steve didn’t get discouraged, and picked up over $8,000 over the back half of the round in order to prevent the proceedings from becoming a runaway! Scores going into Final were Robert at $23,000, Steve at $13,800, and Aleithia at $7,400.
Statistics after Double Jeopardy:
Robert 21 correct 3 incorrect
Steve 20 correct 3 incorrect
Aleithia 11 correct 1 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 83 (0 today).
Today’s game not being a runaway was crucial, as only Steve and Aleithia were correct in Final; Steve bet the absolute minimum, keeping Robert’s standard cover bet in mind, and won the game by $2. It should be noted that Mayim did make reference to Robert making a cover bet on Friday at the top of the show, for those wondering if Steve might have had an inkling as to Robert’s strategy. Steve will come back tomorrow to defend his title!

Aleithia prepared Thanksgiving for 15 people with a toaster oven.
Robert lived in a tent for two months at Duke to get tickets to a game against UNC.
Andy’s Thoughts:
- It is absolutely no coincidence that we’re seeing more wins by $1 and $2; more and more contestants are learning about betting strategy and using it to their advantage.
- I also don’t think anything whatsoever occurred in this episode that would be considered as noteworthy of being used tonight in an anti-Mayim tabloid hit piece; I thought she did an excellent job hosting tonight.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Robert $23,000 Steve $13,800 Aleithia $7,400)
Robert: Standard cover bet today over Steve is $4,601. (Actual bet: $4,601)
Aleithia: You’re probably playing for second today unless Robert overbets. Thus, if Steve makes the minimum bet to defend against Robert and is wrong, he falls to $9,199. Your minimum bet should thus bet $1,801. Anything more than that is OK. (Actual bet: $7,399)
Steve: If Robert bets to cover and is wrong, he falls to $18,399. Your minimum bet is $4,601—though, the more money you bet, the more money you win if you win the game. (Actual bet: $4,601)

Apparently, that WB rendition of Porky and Bess was just a product of my feverish imagination :p Anyway, I’m going to be stuck with it for the rest of the day.
Current FJ streak: 6W
Recently, Rhiannon Giddens (I hope that someday she will be a category) did a revival of it with Greensboro Opera, and she wrote and spoke extensively about the show (“the problematic masterpiece”) and its significance.

Off to a good start this week!
Wouldn’t Steve’s absolute minimum be $4,600? $4,601 seems like it’s betting on Robert wagering to tie instead of to cover.
Betting the extra dollar on Steve’s end hedges against the small chance of Robert betting for the tie, just in case.
Looks like Steve could definitely get a streak going given his strong game play in double jeopardy and the first round. This play is stuck in my head as well even when hearing it and watching it. Good game today
It was very impressive that he was able to hang around and stay alive for the final w/o any Daily Doubles.
“Mayim Bialik’s final week of hosting” – is this just that we’re moving back to Ken hosting for a bit, or is Mayim no longer going to be hosting at all? I haven’t seen any news on this, so I’m curious as to what this means.
Since Season 38 is about to end, I’d suppose that it just means until we start the next the next season.
I seem to recall her tweeting something back in May (when this week was taped) that her current J! contract was up. But that doesn’t mean they hadn’t offered her a new contract for the next season (I don’t believe they’ve officially announced anything).
Or perhaps I am misremembering things, and that was just tabloid trash I had been subjected to and not something that MB herself had said.
My favorite rendition of “Summertime” was the one done by my blind sister who sang it many times when she was younger. Because of that, I was able to get FJ easily today.
Summertime and the Jeopardy! is easy…..
I always roll my eyes when someone reacts to a $1 or $2 win with surprise (like “OMG, they just barely won!”). As if that wasn’t just how betting strategies are constructed.
Have you noticed that the two newspaers pandering the most to the anti-Mayim crowd have common ownership?
I had not, because I’ve been doing my best to ignore that whole trashing. Thanks for that significant info.
As my dear ol’ Pappy used to say, “Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.” I’ll take it . . .
This is being praised as a great bet, and I don’t understand at all. Steve MUST get it right to win absent an insane brainfart by Robert, so just bet it all. It’s far more likely that Robert decides to
Go next level logic, assume Steve will bet as he did, and bet $0 in response
VS
Have an epic brainfart and bet more than is required to guarantee victory if he gets it right
