Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Words From World War I) for Monday, February 13, 2023 (Season 39, Game 111):
“Cistern” & “reservoir” were suggested names for a secret invention, but the British preferred this less clumsy monosyllable
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Jeff Paine, a retired Army officer from Colorado Springs, Colorado![]() |
Kendra Westerhaus, a licensed psychologist from Pocatello, Idaho![]() |
Mira Hayward, a writer from Portland, Oregon (2-day total: $37,000)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Two-day champion Mira Hayward goes for her third victory today against Kendra Westerhaus and Jeff Paine. Mira has won from 2nd and 3rd place going into Final—how will things go today?
Next week begins the High School Reunion tournament, which takes place from Feb. 20–Mar. 9; whoever wins on Friday will return on March 10 to defend.

Correct response: What is “tank”?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2023 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
In order to preserve the secrecy of their new “landship” invention, the British decided to call their counter–poison gas invention a “tank” due to its resemblance to a steel water tank. The idea came from Winston Churchill, who, it is said, got the idea after he noticed how easily farm tractors fitted with “caterpillar” treads were able to travel on muddy ground (the World War I trenches being similar).
And because I suspect that military history is a subject that will bring out the know-it-alls: The citation for today’s Final Jeopardy! clue is the British publication Look and Learn, issue number 209, published 15 January 1966: “Although the Lincoln workmen had already called the weapon a “tank,” the next stage after the trials were successfully completed was the official choice of a name. Among those toyed with, and then rejected, were “container,” “receptacle,” “reservoir,” and “cistern.” None of them sounded as apt as “tank,” so tank it officially was.” (And yes, I will probably make fun of you in the comments if you ask in the comments about a citation.)

Today’s interviews:
Jeff has “I can make it” as a family motto. (The DIY projects rarely work.)
Kendra is undefeated at foosball.
Mira writes for a history podcast titled “Noble Blood”.
Andy’s Thoughts:
- On the final Daily Double, I would pick either a wager of “all-in” (on the aggressive side) or “exactly $600” (on the conservative side).
- Today’s box score: February 13, 2023 Box Score.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Kendra $18,000 Mira $14,800 Jeff $13,000)
Mira: You’re in Stratton’s Dilemma today; you can’t both win a Double Stumper with Kendra and cover Jeff. If you’re going aggressive, go all in to force a cover bet. If not, bet between $4,802—this covers Jeff’s low range—and $8,399, thereby winning a Double Stumper with Kendra. (Actual bet: $4,000)
Kendra: Standard cover bet over Mira is $11,601. (Actual bet: $11,601)
Jeff: If you’re going aggressive, bet at least $10,201 to force a cover bet out of Mira. If not, limit your bet to $3,000, to stay above Mira’s suggested low range. (Actual bet: $13,000)

Is Kendra the first contestant to be introduced as from Idaho this season? Can’t say I remember many before today.
The Archive shows – Mitch Cutter from the 12/22/2022 game (during Ray Lalonde’s run). I’m terrible at remembering those details from games :/
Did this come up recently? It stuck in my memory, but I didn’t find it with a quick check of the Archive 😕
You may have been thinking of last Monday’s FJ category of ‘Inventions’ with “1917” and “warfare” (thus pointing to WWI) within the clue. Also, a couple of us in those comments said our first thought had been “tank” as the response to that one.
That’s exactly what led me to the correct response when I read the final clue.
That likely was it. Thank you!
The last tank related FJ that I remember involved “German immigrants in Texas referred to this animal as a Panzerschwein”
LOL, I’ve heard of German Panzer Divisions (mostly in war movies) practically all my life and it never occurred to me that Panzer just means ‘tank’.
I guessed ‘loo’, though I knew the water closet had preceded WWI and wasn’t a secret invention, but it’s all I had.
Fun fact: yesterday was the tenth anniversary of the famous “Who is some guy in Normandy but I just won $75,000!” response.
Imagine betting $18,000 on a Daily Double and having that be only your second most memorable moment from one game.
Ahhh, Leonard Cooper. Hard to believe it’s been 10 years (and a day).
I got the tank as my response as the british used that as a container for water. Still a good final jeopardy clue response for today, Congrats to Kendra winning today and happy to see John getting the final too.
Having lived near the Air-Ground Combat Center @ 29 Palms in SoCal, I used to see M1 Abrams tanks being transported by heavy duty trucks back and forth to Camp Pendleton all the time. What a beast! Certainly a far cry from the Sherman and Bradley tanks of old.
I was wrong again and went with “trench.” Because I felt that since a reservoir is something dug into the ground (which a cistern can be, too), it made sense.
I’m bummed that Mira didn’t make the TOC, though. I don’t dislike Kendra – the look on her face in the final Daily Double was great – it’s just that I really liked Mira and her genuine, warm vibe, and was hoping to see her again. That and Kendra did not really want that last Daily Double given her clue selections, while Mira was gunning for it. Like discussed the other day, the more authentic a contestant is, the better. I’m not fond of gamebots.
I feel exactly the same way, Andy. I really appreciated the genuineness and warm vibe from Mira. Plus, she reminded me so much of my niece. Too bad there can’t be a Fan Favorite voted into the Tournament of Champions or a Second Chance Tournament. If there were, Mira would get my vote.
I’m a Mira fan as well, who was also rooting for her to qualify for ToC, but alas it wasn’t to be.
I like her voice. She works as a writer for a podcast, but I’d certainly tune in to her doing her own podcast (or being part of one); though I really don’t care a bit about “nobles”, so I don’t know if I’d tune in for anything along the lines of the one she currently writes for. (not that my preferences really have anything to do with the matter)
Well, with them having a lot more lead time before their second Second Chance Tournament, maybe they will figure out a way to include a vote for a fan favorite to pick one of the contestants.
Given Jeff’s profession, I can hardly blame him for going with the more aggressive wagering option on FJ.
I would’ve been very tempted to go all-in on the final Daily Double even if I’d had an insurmountable lead at that point. If ever there were a category made for me…
Ken’s use of “Nano Nano” for the first “bumper,” just shows how comfortable he’s become has the host of “daytime” Jeopardy. When he first hosted he would stick with “stock bumpers” leading into commercial breaks.
As for this Final Jeoardy, if I had thought what a cistern, or, reservoir, are synonyms for, associating it with a military term, MAYBE I would’ve gotten the correct response, BUT I doubt it.
