September 2023 Second Chance Competition — Week 1 Preview

First-run episodes of Jeopardy! resume this week, with three weeks of Second Chance competition. All of these players played in Season 37 of the show, and each week’s winner will advance to a new competition, Champions’ Wildcard, featuring past champions from Season 37 and 38, competing for a spot in a Tournament of Champions that will take place at the conclusion of the WGA strike.

It is still my editorial belief that these players were deliberately chosen on short notice in order to ensure that they would be less likely to study the recycled questions that are being used due to the WGA strike.

Monday will also be the first day where the consolation prizes are $3,000 and $2,000 instead of $2,000 and $1,000 as they were in the past.

Jill Tucker
Mulino, Oregon
Jill Tucker on Jeopardy!
14 correct, 2 incorrect
1/1 on rebound attempts (on 4 rebound opportunities)
22.81% in first on buzzer (13/57)
1/1 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $2,000)
1/1 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $9,400
Jill’s past appearance: January 28, 2021

Jill was the third contestant in the Zach Newkirk return game, where Zach faced off against 7-day champion Brian Chang. Jill played very well against such stiff competition, picking up $10,600 going into Final, even though she finished the match in third place.

Gabriel Ostler
Orinda, California
Gabriel Ostler on Jeopardy!
26 correct, 7 incorrect
0/0 on rebound attempts (on 0 rebound opportunities)
52.63% in first on buzzer (30/57)
1/2 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: -$1,500)
0/1 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $17,400
Gabriel’s past appearance: November 27, 2020

Gabriel performed very strongly against ToC semifinalist Ryan Hemmel, but fell on the wrong side of his first Daily Double and Final Jeopardy. One thing that Reddit was quick to point out when the lineup for this competition was released was the incredible irony of Gabriel being introduced as a “script writer” in the middle of the WGA strike. That being said: it appears as though Gabriel does not write entertainment scripts, but instead is a writer for NBC Bay Area.

Derek Allen
Cassopolis, Michigan
Derek Allen on Jeopardy!
13 correct, 3 incorrect
0/0 on rebound attempts (on 1 rebound opportunity)
24.56% in first on buzzer (14/57)
1/1 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $1,600)
0/1 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $10,200
Derek’s past appearance: June 7, 2021

In his initial appearance, Derek finished third against Julia Markham Cameron and Verlinda Johnson Henning; however, he did have a 5-digit Coryat score, buoyed by the majority of his doing very well in the bottom two rows of the board.

Overall Thoughts: Going just off “initial appearance”, Gabriel definitely has the strongest stats of the three players. If that holds—and remember, it’s been two to three years since these players were on, and a lot can happen in two to three years—then I think Gabriel is the most likely to advance. However, anything can happen!

Cody Lawrence
Sherman Oaks, California
Cody Lawrence on Jeopardy!
19 correct, 3 incorrect
1/1 on rebound attempts (on 4 rebound opportunities)
33.33% in first on buzzer (19/57)
0/1 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: -$4,600)
0/1 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $16,000
Cody’s past appearance: December 8, 2020

Cody finished in third (second going into Final) against Kristen Thomas-McGill and John Vigna. Much like Gabriel in Monday’s line up. Cody is another occurrence of a player who had a very strong game, but landed on the wrong side of an early aggressive Daily Double (as well as Final).

David Maybury
Richmond, Virginia
David Maybury on Jeopardy!
23 correct, 2 incorrect
1/1 on rebound attempts (on 2 rebound opportunities)
38.60% in first on buzzer (22/57)
0/1 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: -$10,000)
1/1 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $18,400
David’s past appearance: February 22, 2021

David played against Natalie Tyson and Sam Stapleton in the first game guest-hosted by Mike Richards. (I invite everyone to read the Andy’s Pregame Thoughts for that game. I can’t believe how naive we were then, considering how the following six months played out.) David was playing very well before losing $10,000 on a very late Daily Double. In fact, David was probably the biggest omission from last year’s Second Chance competition. He’s also likely been keeping himself in the best “game shape”, helping many other prospective contestants prepare for their own appearances.

Susan Schulman
Greensboro, Vermont
Susan Schulman on Jeopardy!
19 correct, 2 incorrect
0/0 on rebound attempts (on 2 rebound opportunities)
33.33% in first on buzzer (19/57)
1/1 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $3,000)
0/1 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $18,400
Susan’s past appearance: May 13, 2021

In her appearance, Susan played against Matt McAndrews and Amanda Ganske. Susan had over $20,000 going into Final Jeopardy, and then fell at the final hurdle on a clue about Dr. Seuss’s Oh, The Places You’ll Go!

Overall Thoughts: I think this game has three very strong players in it, but I also think that David’s been keeping himself in the best game shape. There’s a lot of variance in Jeopardy!, though, so any of these three players can absolutely win this game.

Hari Parameswaran
Cupertino, California
Hari Parameswaran on Jeopardy!
17 correct, 6 incorrect
0/1 on rebound attempts (on 2 rebound opportunities)
35.85% in first on buzzer (19/53)
1/2 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: -$2,000)
0/1 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $17,000
Hari’s past appearance: April 28, 2021

In his appearance, Hari played against Leah Caglio and Dana Schumacher-Schmidt. Hari was tied with Leah going into Final Jeopardy, but a miss in Final sent him home. Another stark reminder that Jeopardy! is not quiz bowl—Hari was a star high school quiz bowler, but the history of this show is scattered with stories of those who dominated in scholastic competition but faltered in Studio 10.

Donna Vorreyer
Willowbrook, Illinois
Donna Vorreyer on Jeopardy!
20 correct, 4 incorrect
0/1 on rebound attempts (on 2 rebound opportunities)
38.60% in first on buzzer (22/57)
0/0 on Daily Doubles
0/1 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $12,000
Donna’s past appearance: April 19, 2021

Donna played in Anderson Cooper’s debut as guest host against Mike Nelson and Patrick Hume. Donna had a very strong all-Coryat $12,000 going into Final.

Matt Wierman
La Palma, California
Matt Wierman on Jeopardy!
20 correct, 3 incorrect
0/0 on rebound attempts (on 2 rebound opportunities)
35.09% in first on buzzer (20/57)
0/2 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: -$7,000)
1/1 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $18,600
Matt’s past appearance: March 8, 2021

In his initial appearance, Matt played in Katie Couric’s debut as guest host against Justin Yeager and Laura Portwood-Stacer. Matt finished second after losing $7,000 on a pair of Daily Doubles in Double Jeopardy.

Overall Thoughts: Hari is probably the strongest of all three players on paper. But, even as I said above, Jeopardy! is not quiz bowl—anything can happen.

  1. Good preview. Hari’s name is misspelled at one point.

  2. When all was said and done, and playeed out, I am happy to see that Hari won the week.
