Fall 2023 Champions Wildcard: Clubs — Finals Preview

Yes, we did see some preemptions over the past week, but we’re now down to the last three players in the Clubs group of Jeopardy! Champions Wildcard! One of these three players are going to be qualifying for the next Tournament of Champions!

Monday, November 27, 2023 & Tuesday, November 28, 2023:

Jen Jazwinski (5)
Algonquin, Illinois
Jen Jazwinski on Jeopardy!
100 correct, 12 incorrect
5/6 on rebound attempts (on 12 rebound opportunities)
32.63% in first on buzzer (93/285)
6/8 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $18,000)
5/5 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $14,800

Jen Jazwinski won a come-from-behind Thanksgiving thriller after Ed Hashima couldn’t change his response from hydrogen to helium in time.
Dennis Chase (9)
Palm Springs, California
Dennis Chase on Jeopardy!
131 correct, 15 incorrect
6/6 on rebound attempts (on 15 rebound opportunities)
45.07% in first on buzzer (128/284)
5/7 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $10,600)
3/5 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $20,440

While his win wasn’t a runaway, Dennis generally dominated the run of play in the semifinal over Danielle Maurer and Fred Nelson.
Nick Cascone (16)
Queens, New York

93 correct, 16 incorrect
4/5 on rebound attempts (on 15 rebound opportunities)
39.91% in first on buzzer (91/228)
4/9 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $3,200)
2/4 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $17,550

Nick took a runaway victory in the first semifinal over Deanna Bolio and Kit Sekelsky. A lot of people have been counting Nick out of things here, but he was very active on Reddit at the start of this event, which Mark Barrett of J! Archive took as a clue that Nick was going to perform well.

Overall Thoughts: My feeling here is that Dennis is the strongest of the three players, especially on the signaling device, but his clue selection could prove to be his Achilles heel in this final. His reluctance to hunt for Daily Doubles gave Danielle Maurer an opening in the semifinal, and Jen would have no compunctions in making Dennis pay for that sort of mistake. I’m expecting an exciting final, but Dennis will need to take the Daily Doubles out of his opponents’ hands to have the best chance of making the Tournament of Champions.

  1. Clubs Winner Prediction: Dennis Chase

  2. This is one of the most interesting matches of the postseason so far, so I’m actually gonna say stuff about it!

In short: I think each player has specific strengths and weaknesses that could completely make or break them.

Dennis is, in my mind, the clear favorite; his averages are much higher than the other two, and he’s extremely consistent with his buzzer dominance and with his high attempt count. What worries me is, as you said, his being reluctant to hunt Daily Doubles, and while he usually makes massive wagers when he does find them, I don’t know if his top-down strategy will work as well against these two.

A lot of people probably would think Nick is the favorite, and I don’t blame them after watching his semifinal performance. The big thing that worries me, though, is that his dominance on the buzzer seems to come and go at random, which is very much different from Dennis’ consistent skill with the buzzer. He also seems to have even less refined hunting strategies than Dennis when it comes to Daily Doubles (in his semifinal, he singlehandedly cleared out the entire top row in Double Jeopardy before DD3 was found), and he’s the only player of the three to have a rate of Daily Double conversion below 50%, which could doom him if one of his big bets comes on a clue he doesn’t know. He seems to rely on the strategy of “be first and be correct”, but having to play against Dennis, I think successfully executing that strategy is easier said than done.

As for Jen? Well, she’s got a couple things that could be the saving grace for her, but each have… some drawbacks. Saving grace #1 is that, generally, her hunting skill is the most refined of the three, and she’s also generally as aggressive as the other two. However, she hasn’t exactly had the best luck with the buzzer, either, and it’s a lot harder to find DDs if you’re struggling with buzzing in. Saving grace #2 is her (thus far) perfect track record in Final Jeopardy, but relying on the 61st clue to save you if the 60 that came before didn’t go so well is a rather dangerous strategy.

Overall? What I think is most likely to happen is Dennis gets a very slim runaway and takes the ToC spot, with Jen taking second place after the pair of Final Jeopardy clues work out better for her than for Nick. However, this could really go any way – as Chris Berman said many, many times, that’s why they play the games!

    • Very nicely done analysis Master Doge! And yes, I do see this coming down to Jen and Dennis. It should be good! 🙂
