Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Landmarks) for Monday, January 1, 2024 (Season 40, Game 81):
213 feet wide, this late 18th c. European structure has 5 portals, the middle of which was—at first—for royals only
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Christopher Pennant, a sports journalist & announcer from Chicago, Illinois (Friday’s total: $16,000)![]() |
Xanni Brown, a post-doc researcher originally from Cincinnati, Ohio (Friday’s total: $29,600)![]() |
Greg Czaja, a cardiologist from San Diego, California (Friday’s total: $35,200)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Happy New Year! 2024 begins today with a big day in the world of Jeopardy!—in North America, we’ll be seeing the final game of Week 2 of Second Chance. Greg Czaja picked up $35,200 on Friday, but Xanni Brown also has $29,600—it’s still very close and still anybody’s game. Christopher Pennant with $16,000 sits third and will need to play much more aggressively to have a hope of making a come-from-behind victory today.
It’s also a big day for fans of the show in the United Kingdom, as ITV is debuting the new UK version, hosted by Stephen Fry. UK Jeopardy! will be airing today at 5:45 PM GMT (12:45 PM EST) before setting into its normal time slot of 4:00 PM GMT (11:00 AM EST) tomorrow. (ITV’s coverage of the New Year’s Day horse racing at Cheltenham is one major reason for their schedule changes in the UK today.)
Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!
If you’re looking for a quick rundown of what happened last week, I write a weekly recap column for Geeks Who Drink’s Questionist, released every Sunday. Yesterday’s column was titled “Quick on the Draw”. Questionist also has a newsletter that you can sign up for!
It should be noted that results on this site will be delayed for a couple of reasons today: first of all, coverage of the Rose Parade will be preempting the show in early ABC markets today. Secondly, the premiere of UK Jeopardy! will be airing at the same time as the early airings today—and, being only one person, I can only cover one thing at once!

Correct response: What is the Brandenburg Gate?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
The Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburger Tor) was built as a famous western entrance gate to Berlin, Germany, built by King of Prussia Frederick William II after he realized that Berlin didn’t have the monuments that Vienna, Paris, or London did. The gate today is seen as a symbol of European unity and peace.
As somebody who has spent a lot of time recently playing Euro Truck Simulator 2 on my PC, I was actually disappointed when I realized that a major landmark such as the Brandenburg Gate wasn’t depicted in the game itself.
In terms of how I think this will play today: I could definitely see our players seeing “late 18th century” and “at first” and making a detour into France.
One thing that I’ll be interested in seeing today is how many people just Googled “213 feet wide”, saw a matching result for the Tower Bridge, thought “that fits European”, and then got mad online after they failed to realize that the Tower Bridge doesn’t fit the rest of the clue.

Greg: The worst you can do is second place here, and if Xanni bets to cover, it doesn’t matter what you do. I’d go all in here to force the cover bet, but you can bet whatever you’d like. (Actual bet: $0)
Xanni: Standard cover bet over Greg is $13,001. (Actual bet: $13,800)
Christopher: You have a chance at second if Xanni bets to cover and is incorrect. Bet at least $5,800. (Actual bet: $8,600)

Familiarity with Berlin helped me get this one. The trap here is wasting time thinking about London and Paris, due to the mention of royals.
(Happy New Year, and thanks for turning me on to “thrice,” which I now play every day.)
Ditto re Thrice!
“(Happy New Year, and thanks for turning me on to “thrice,” which I now play every day.)”
What is “Thrice”?
Vince:
The Site Comment Policy explicitly states: “Any comment that clearly demonstrates that one did not read the post being commented on will not be approved.”
I totally agree with you. How hard is it to do a quick ‘Find’ to check first?
However, in a bit of defense of Vince, Gregory’s wording had made it sound like it was referring to info you had supplied prior to today and there are portions of your post which appear to be there everyday and once read, perhaps one doesn’t think about maybe needing to read again or that still looking familiar doesn’t mean that you actually remember what it says. But, again, using ‘Find’ is easy.
· Christopher’s Final Jeopardy! response is omitted.
· Xanni is moving on to Champions Wildcard, not Second Chance.
(Busy day, I know, and tomorrow will be even busier with a Celebrity game as well; at least the year in the copyright notice was updated.)
This was another Final Jeopardy that I somehow stumbled onto the correct response. They words portal, europe, just somehow lead me to “What is the Brandenberg Gate?” Other than knowing of it’s existance, I knew nothing about the gate. But however I came up with the correct response, it was another get for me?
Andy, purely out of curiosity, how are you able to see the new UK version of Jeparody? Is one of the Canadian networks carrying it?
More important, hope everyone had a safe New Year, and, Andy, that you have recovered from last weeks fall, or, are still recovering.
I usually remember the name Brandenburg Gate when I see a picture of it, but that was all I knew about it until now. [Thanks, Andy, for the additional info.] But I don’t know much more about things in France. It was “the middle of which was—at first—for royals only” part of the clue that made me think of the Tower of London (which until now I’d thought was part of Tower Bridge), but I was pretty sure [rightfully so] it was much older than that, but I “went with it” just in case.
The word portal and the location of berlin Germany led me to the Brandenburg gate. It alao made me think of the Brandenburg concerto as well
Since neither Berlin nor Germany were provided in the clue, I guess you mean that “portal” made you think of the Brandenburg gate and knowing that the location of berlin Germany is in Europe [thus the ‘European’ in the clue] confirmed to you it was the correct response?
If I had been on stage for this episode, I would have guessed the Louvre. I knew it was the wrong time period for when the palace in Versailles was built, but otherwise had no clue.
I went with the Eiffel Tower, which I knew was wrong. Better to be wrong than not guess at all though, right?
Great game all and Xanni went for it and boom, advance to Champions Wildcard. Her willingness to go for it on DD’s could lead to a Jilana run in Champions Wildcare in my opinion. Time will tell!
Looking forward to Week 3 that starts tomorrow, as I was there on December 5th to see the Tuesday through Thursday shows taped. Mum is the word! 🙂
I had never heard of any of those misheard lyrics.😄
I’d only heard the Beatles one, but I was able to figure out a couple more in real time.
The “IT’S AN EX-CAR FOR A REASON” category amused me. I only got three of them correct, but one was the triple stumper. That one was easy for me because of a different ‘EX’ — in school year ’70-’71 I dated a guy who drove one.
Hi LIsa! Happy New Year! Was that the Ace? I got that one and it was a Triple Stumper.
I did not like . . . This Juice Newton plea to a departing lover does not ask, “Just brush my teeth before you leave me, baby”. [Note that the quote is a plea.] I think the correct response should be: What is “Just touch my cheek”?
I’m not going to make any argument against the judges (much less take it out on Ken, though I feel that for many multi-word responses some kind of slight interjection has been made to invite the player to “finish” the response they have made so far) but this was not done for Xanni for that clue. At least it did not keep her from winning, but nonetheless this was vexing because the lyrics never simply say “Just call me angel of the morning before you leave me, baby”. The specific lines (in which part is misheard as “brush my teeth”) are actually “Just call me angel of the morning, angel [,] Just touch my cheek before you leave me, baby”.
However, the main problem was the clue being so vague (even misleading) as to what kind of response was required — title (like for $400), singer (like for $1200) band (like for $1600), or missing lyric word(s) [= title] (like for $800)? The clue says ‘This Juice Newton plea’; “just call me angel” IS a plea (though incomplete, like a first name without a last) within the song, but Ken’s final ruling [“Angel of the Morning” is the hit] indicates they were going for title. I think this huge vagueness is why it was a triple stumper even after Xanni’s response would have immediately put the other two onto what song it referenced (had they not known in the first place), because they were just unwilling to risk misunderstanding whether title or corrected lyric was required as the response.
So, I blame the writers. I do know that they need to make the $2000 clue more difficult, but making it a conundrum is not the preferred way to do that.
Yes, I know that this one couldn’t be asking for singer or band like the $1200 and $1600 clues since it already says Juice Newton in the clue, I was just pointing out that ALL the other clues in that category clearly indicated the nature of the required response, but the $2000 clue was enigmatic.
I recognize that misunderstanding what aspect of the clue indicates the required response — like date, place, person, etc. — is a frequent mistake by players, but it is normally due to them having been distracted by figuring out other parts of the clue, not due to it having been obscure.
Thankfully, I was able to quickly hone in on “the Brandenburg Gate” for Final Jeopardy! Having been a summer school student in Germany, and remembering what the gate looks like, led me to the correct response. However, for about 5 seconds I thought that it could be the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Glad I settled on the Brandenburg Gate. Happy New Year to all!
