Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category From the French) for Wednesday, January 3, 2024 (Season 40, Game 83):
With murder, shadows, a nosy reporter & Peter Lorre, 1940’s “Stranger on the Third Floor” is the first example of this, some say
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Rachel Cohen, a consultant originally from Chevy Chase, Maryland![]() |
Randall Rayford, a solar project developer from Houston, Texas![]() |
Andrew Whatley, an academic administrator originally from Beauregard, Alabama![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
In today’s second Second Chance semifinal, we see Andrew Whatley, Randall Rayford, and Rachel Cohen. Andrew put up over $20,000 going into Final Jeopardy against Yogesh Raut (much like Michael Cavaliere, who won yesterday), while Randall lost to Cris Pannullo and Rachel Cohen lost to Ray Lalonde. I suspect Andrew is the strongest player of the three, but that’s certainly no guarantee of on-stage performance!

Film noir (literally translated as “black film” or “dark film”) is a famed Hollywood film genre whose heyday was in the 1940s and 1950s. While the definition is oft-debated among film historians, the genre is often seen as the film extension of Depression-era American crime fiction. Classic films in the genre in the National Film Registry include The Maltese Falcon, Double Indemnity, The Big Sleep, Sunset Boulevard, and Notorious.

Andrew found the Daily Double immediately; unfortunately, he gave an incorrect response and lost most of his score. (I fell for the same trap he did.) Two-thirds of the way through the round, Randall found the Daily Double, and shocked Ken with a successful True Daily Double! By the end of the round, Randall lead, but the scores were very interesting, as Andrew’s and Rachel’s total equalled Randall’s!
Statistics after Double Jeopardy:
Randall 21 correct 4 incorrect
Rachel 18 correct 3 incorrect
Andrew 14 correct 4 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Andy’s Thoughts:
- Kudos to all three players for their general strategy today.
- Playing along at home, I certainly had a knack today of matching contestants today on crucial Daily Doubles. I matched Andrew’s response on his today, and I also acted identically to Brendan over on the UK end of things earlier in the day. Whoops!
- Today’s box score: January 3, 2024 Box Score.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Randall $19,600 Rachel $13,200 Andrew $6,400)
Andrew: You pretty much need to go all in here to have a hope of victory. (Actual bet: $6,400)
Randall: Standard cover bet over Rachel is $6,801. Don’t go any higher, though, because of the A = B + C situation. (Actual bet: $6,801)
Rachel: Keep Andrew locked out; limit your bet to $399 or less. (Actual bet: $399)

I got “What is ‘film noir’?” right away. The clue elements were classic!
P.S. Judith P., I’m glad to see you back. I too went with “Arc De Triomphe”, even though I knew it doesn’t have ‘five portals’, but I couldn’t think of anything else. The ‘Brandenburg Gate’ completely escaped me.
I guessed correctly. Key word for me was shadows which made me think dark which made me think noir.
I also guessed ‘film noir’ right away because it is pretty much the only term I know of a film genre, but shadows and 1940 made me pretty comfortable with my choice. However, I thought it was possible that movie could have been the first example of some film technique like close-ups or flashbacks or voice-over commentary or even something more technical concerning the film stock itself with the extra information beyond title just to throw us off by making us think of film noir.
Hi RedRose, I also got “film noir” right away. I’ve seen so many of those classic movies in art theatres and on videotape. Peter Lorre was famous as a film noir actor, too. Cheers!
Thinking of dark films leads me to film noir because of dark being crucial here. Congratulations to today’s winners
I understand the concept of the genre. But, unfortunately for me, today is a loss. I believe even if I had the full 30 minutes with ads, and, promotional announcements, I never would have gotten it. Congrats to the on stage players, and, those commenting here, who did.
Do you think they would have accepted “cinema noir”?
I don’t know if they would or not.
I simply guessed “what is noir?” I assume without saying specifically “film noir” that I was incorrect.
The reason I think that just “noir” would not be acceptable is because the clue does not explicitly say that “Stranger on the Third Floor” is a film rather than a book, short story, blues song, etc. Including Peter Lorre implies it is a film, but he could have been referenced by name in one of those other things — not likely, but just the slight possibility of that makes me think one must include “film” in the response.
Based on all the information made public thus far, both on the Inside Jeopardy! podcast and from announced taping dates, it’s expected that the ToC will commence on February 23 and end no later than March 20 (if the final series went the maximum possible length, the final game would be on that date).
Heck, I was at this taping and still didn’t remember FJ today. I didn’t know it then either. But I know I do like “film noir.” 🙂 Great game and well thought out on the betting by all 3 players. On to tomorrow for the final showing that I saw taped on December 5th.
