Andy’s Weekly Thoughts (3/9): Let Me Help You!

Week 26 of the Jeopardy! season is done; here are some more editorial thoughts!

Following Up From Last Week: Jeopardy! Will Need To Get Ahead Of The “Snubbed” Complaints

This is a follow-up to something that I talked about in last week’s editorial in terms of the Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament.

Last week, I said that fans need to remember that some of their favorite players may have been invited but chose to decline a tournament invitation.

Indeed, the show has an opportunity to get ahead of this—but they need to communicate to fans why some of their favorites won’t be taking part in this event, especially if an invitation was afforded but declined; otherwise, the media will be filled with criticisms of the producers that absolutely could have been prevented. This would also certainly prevent any affected players from having a spotlight placed upon them and hopefully keeping those players from having to make a statement they might not feel comfortable making.

And if the show says that a player declined an invitation and that player doesn’t want to speak up otherwise, leave that player alone; players do not owe the fans any explanations if they don’t want to take part in this.

A Note To Every Single Prospective Contestant: I Want To Help!

I was very sad when Ike’s Final Jeopardy wager on Thursday was revealed, especially as it confirmed the sinking thought I’d had going into Final Jeopardy during my watch. Obviously, if you’re reading this, you’re probably aware of what happened: Ike lost on Thursday because he went all-in in Final Jeopardy instead of betting $0.

While Ben is an excellent player and a very deserving finalist, when I watch a game, I want to see everyone play the game as well as possible, from start to finish. That’s why I have a Wagering Strategy 101 guide on this website: I know that wagering strategy can be intimidating, and I hope that this simplifies things as much as possible for players.

So, if you’re going on the show, whether civilian or celebrity, I would love to help you, especially with this part of your preparation. After all, I’m sure you want to increase your chances of winning!

On The Subject Of Final Jeopardy Wagering In The ToC Final

One thing that happened in last year’s final might happen again if someone gets to two wins: Andrew He, at two wins, found himself in third place in a couple of games with less than half of the leader’s score. The leader, Amy Schneider, in both cases, deliberately did not make a cover bet to ensure that Andrew was prevented from getting a third victory in a come-from-behind fashion.

I actually thought that was a very good strategy overall from Amy and would not be surprised if such a thing happened again during this year’s final.

In Closing

The Tournament of Champions final starts Tuesday, and I’m expecting it to be very hotly contested! I can’t wait!
