Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Eurasia) for Monday, March 18, 2024 (Season 40, Game 136):
Zvartnots International Airport serves this capital & has the code EVN, all letters found in the city’s name
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Ben Chan, a philosophy professor from Green Bay, Wisconsin (2 wins)![]() |
Troy Meyer, a music executive from Tampa, Florida (1 win)![]() |
Yogesh Raut, a social and personality psychologist from Vancouver, Washington (1 win)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Happy Monday! The week of Jeopardy! kicks off this week with a player having an opportunity to end the tournament with a win: Ben Chan picked up his second come-from-behind $1 victory on Friday, bringing him win away from the $250,000 first prize and the spot in Jeopardy! Masters. However, both Yogesh and Troy aren’t going to go down without a fight.
One important thing to remember that came up in last year’s final: when Andrew He got to 2 victories, there were situations where he was in third place going into Final Jeopardy. Amy Schneider then began to deliberately not make cover bets from the lead in order to prevent Andrew from being able to “back into” a third victory. It would not surprise me to see the same thing happen to Ben if Ben were in third place going into Final.

Zvartnots International Airport is the airport servicing Yerevan, the capital city of the former Soviet republic of Armenia. The city is, interestingly, connected to Noah’s Ark and Mount Ararat; it reputedly got its name because “Yerevats!” means “It appeared!” in Armenian; Noah was said to have looked upon the area following the famed flood’s recession. Zvartnots itself gets its name from the town of Zvartnots, located about 6 miles west of Yerevan.
In another case of “the writers are prescient again”, while this obviously would have taken place in between taping and airing, Zvartnots International Airport recently made minor international news when Russian border guards were removed from the airport.

Troy $16,800 + $1,601 = $18,401 (What is Yerevan?)

Andy’s Thoughts:
- Ken’s behavior to Troy’s incorrect response on the “Jesus Christ Superstar” clue (where Troy responded with “Fiddler on the Roof” is exactly why he makes such a good host of the show. He seems so comfortable making these jokes because he knows the material so well.
- Chances of winning the ToC for each player: Yogesh 47.005% (+100), Ben 38.950% (+140), Troy 14.045% (+570).
- Chances of each finals length: 6 games 62.567% (-200), 7 games 37.433% (+150).
- The ELVIS view of the opening clues of this game has been posted to the show’s YouTube channel.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Yogesh $38,800 Troy $16,800 Ben $9,200)
Yogesh: You’ve got a runaway, you don’t have to bet anything. Anything $5,199 or less keeps the runaway. (Actual bet: $0)
Troy: Cover bet over Ben is $1,601. (Actual bet: $1,601)
Ben: Bet at least $6,000 for the best shot at second place. (Actual bet: $7,601)

I guessed “What is Geneva?”, even though the letters are in sequence NEV, not EVN. Also, if it were that, I doubt the category would have been “Eurasia”. I never knew of Yerevan, and missed any news reports about it. But I have a feeling all three players at this level will be less misinformed. I wouldn’t be surprised by a triple get.
My thought was Venice, but everything you told yourself about Geneva came to my mind about Venice. I take comfort in knowing that, given 2 hours rather than 30 seconds, I still would not have pulled this one.
Yep, I was thinking 30 seconds would be too short for me to figure this out, and then when I saw the answer, like you, two hours would not have been enough.
btw, Swiss capital is Bern, not Geneva.
and neither is Venice (also mentioned above). I remember a final jeopardy regarding European capitals where someone incorrectly said Bern when the answer was Bonn.
Exactly the same here — on all points.
Too hard for the average Jeopardy! viewer, but not for a champion who would have boned up on word capitals prior to appearing in the tournament. Today’s winner will probably be determined prior to Final Jeopardy.
RE Today’s winner will probably be determined prior to Final Jeopardy.
You called it. How’d you know?
Enjoyed Yogesh’s FJ response.
I meant that FJ would probably be a triple get, so that whoever was in first place going into final would probably win. I did not foresee Yogesh’s runaway game. I think that Troy needs a pair of runaway games, however, if he is going to pull this thing out.
Got it, because I am planning to go there next month to close in on my goal of visiting 100 countries and Armenia will be number 95
Thinking about train from there to Georgia for #96. Apologies for name drop but that’s how I knew the answer. Tough one doubt all will get it
A dominant performance by Yogesh today. His betting miscue in Game 1 is looming large. Nice he has a sense of humor about it.
My wish for 6 or 7 games has been fulfilled!
Airport codes aren’t something I know a lot of. I know of Armenia, but not it’s capital, and, if I read about Russia removing border guards from Zvarnots Airport, I didn’t retain it. So a miss for me.
This T of C final, so far, would seem to be everything Davies could ask for. I hope Troy wins tomorrow, setting up a “winner takes all” Wednesday. (Something I’m sure Davies wouldn’t mind.)
Having dated an Armenian woman for 6 years back in the 1980’s is the only reason I knew enough to get this one, lol.
The category was crucial for me here. Wouldn’t have been able to get through the haystack without the indication to start at the intersection of the continents.
Well….I failed at FJ again. 15 day losing streak. When I saw the answer though, I felt like I should have gotten it. 🙃
Retro congrats to Yogesh on the dominant win! Tonight’s Game 6 is going to be super fun. Troy is going to go big or go home I presume and will be hammering on that buzzer!
Here’s to a winner take all game 7, which would be amazing!
