Andy’s Mailbag (3/17): Who Would I Like To See Back?

Here’s a short mailbag column! It’s shorter than I’d like, but I still want to publish it—because I am both working on getting stats from past players together for JIT, and because I did get a somewhat time-sensitive question this week to answer! As always, email mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com if you have a question you’d like me to answer in the column!

So, Where Is My JIT Preview?

I’m still working through it.

Basically, in order to get the stats that I want in order to properly do the preview, I have to go through a large number of old games. And that takes time. I’m sure it’ll be ready in time for the start of the event; it just might not be ready today.

My friends over at Geeks Who Drink have introduced a daily trivia game—Thrice! Existing to make daily clever trivia content accessible to a wide audience, it's a daily challenge that tries to get you to the answer via three separate clues. It has a shareable score functionality to challenge your friends and new questions every day will give you a new daily social ritual. You can find it at thricegame.com.

Who Do I Want To See Again?

Duke asks,

On the most recent episode of the Inside Jeopardy! podcast, Michael Davies talked about working on “eligibility requirements” for bringing back contestants from previous seasons, particularly Kids & Teens. Care to speculate on how they might do that? Are there any former contestants you think deserve a second chance?

Excellent question!

Firstly, here’s the way The Price Is Right does it—you’re allowed to re-appear after 10 years. I could see that happening for any Kids Week or Teen Tournament players. If any adult contestants are allowed to reappear—and I would say that is a very big if at this point—I might say that anyone invited back for a ToC or higher-level tournament would definitely be seen as ineligible for a return regular appearance, as I think that the show currently sees Jeopardy! Masters as its pinnacle, and this would be the best way to set a cutoff..

In terms of people who I’d want to see back? This might be a bit of a copout answer, but anyone who wants to! The last thing I want to do is name someone, only to later realize that the person has moved on from trivia/quizzing and doesn’t want to deal with Jeopardy! any longer. Though, I do think that many fans would want to see some of the players who dominated proceedings in their first appearance, like a Kunle DeMuren or a Skyler Hornback.

  1. 100% agree about DeMuren and Hornback, they’re probably around their prime level of play as of right now.

  2. I’m horribly late to this party, but I’ll also add this:

Japan’s “Panel Quiz Attack 25,” their longest-running quiz show, allowed any contestant, win or lose, return after 5 years. (It’s a slightly different case from Jeopardy! or even TPIR since they only air one episode a week, but that was even the case before original host Kiyoshi Kodama passed away in 2011.) After they switched networks in 2022, I believe the interval was actually reduced to 3 years.

One thing they did that I think could actually fit for Davies’ vision of “the Jeopardy! league”: an open championship. For the original network finale, they invited any previous winner to audition for the show again–they then picked 12 people (6 from Eastern Japan, 6 from Western Japan) to compete in a qualifier to play on the last episode.

Of course, as someone who could potentially be let back on the show by this development, I’ll still be watching with bated breath.
