Correct response: Who is D.H. Lawrence?
More information about Final Jeopardy:
(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
English writer D.H. Lawrence, active in the 1910s and 1920s, counted among his most well-known novels 1913’s Sons and Lovers, 1920’s Women in Love (the sequel to 1915’s The Rainbow), and, most famously, 1928’s Lady Chatterly’s Lover. His writing was often very famously the subject of censorship trials due to what was perceived at the time as inappropriate portrayals of sexuality and his use of profanity.
I suspect that this Final will play on the slightly more difficult side, as the necessary logic jump from “love” to Lawrence, while there, isn’t immediately obvious—with the only other entry point being what many would probably see as Lawrence’s third- or fourth-best-known work.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- While it is true that the Mars bar in the rest of the world is marketed as Milky Way in the United States, “Milky Way” is the only correct response to that clue as written. Note that the clue specifically said “malted dairy product” and “1924”; there was no malted dairy product called Mars, and the Mars bar was not sold in the rest of the world under that name until 1932. The judges were correct to rule against Monica, as Monica’s response did not fit all of the constraints of the clue.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Neilesh $26,100 Monica $7,600 Sean $5,200)
Neilesh: Bet no more than $10,899. (Actual bet: $3,000)
Sean: If Monica covers and gets Final Jeopardy incorrect, she falls to $4,799. Bet no more than $400. (Actual bet: $2,401)
Monica: Standard cover bet over Sean is $2,801. (Actual bet: $5,000)

Guessed Gabriel Garcia Marquez thinking of Love in the Time of Cholera. Don’t think I would have gotten to Lawrence in enough time.
All I could think of was 70s/80s self-help guru Leo Buscaglia, who was not a typical Jeopardy subject but did write several books with “love” in the titles.
He hasn’t been named in a clue in 20 years, but it would have been a plausible guess in the show’s early seasons…
I predict that the next series of clickbait Jeopardy stories will feature the
Mars bar/Milky Way clue.
This Final Jeopardy was on the “difficult” side of the meter for me, since I didn’t know that Lawrence had written two other novels witht he word love in the title, and, had written a fourth with the word love in a subtitle.
Yeah, this clue was impossible to get in 30 seconds if you didn’t know it right away like Neilesh did. I know DH Lawrence from Lady Chatterly, but doubt I’d have ever recalled Sons and Lovers in time (have never heard of The Rainbow). This clue could have used an additional pointer about being considered “obscene” at the time. That could have narrowed the time window down a little, but not too much, and still doesn’t give a lot to go on given how many authors were labeled that way.
My problem was that I don’t think of Sons and Lovers as containing the word love. I couldn’t come up with another author, but was sure I was wrong as only one has the word love while two contain love in a related word. I was impressed that it wasn’t a triple stumper.
I agree with your assessment about the difficulty of coming up with the correct response due to trying to think of titles with the specific word ‘love’ in them when they are actually including the word ‘lover’. I think the framing of the clue as … “Love” is within the titles … rather than saying … The word “love” is in the titles … [or maybe even just … “Love” is in the titles] represents that situation, but would have been difficult to pick up on.
Neilesh impresses me as the type of contestant that could go a long way. Software engineers seem to have a pretty good record on Jeopardy! as I recall. It would not surprise me to see Neilesh finish the week and the season as the current champion and be the holdover winner until next season. That’s my opinion anyway.
Agreed. After a shaky Jeopardy round on his first day, Neilesh has been very impressive.
I didn’t have one iota of a clue on FJ, so I just threw out Steinbeck. LOL.
Will Neilesh be a 5 game champ to close Season 40 and come back to start Season 41?
He looks strong enough to do so. Time will tell! 4 more games left in Season 40.
Ready for that vacation Andy? 🙂
