Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, February 3, 2025

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the February 3, 2025, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Places of Disaster) for Monday, February 3, 2025 (Season 41, Game 106):

In 1883 an old sailor didn’t know what its name meant but believed the natives “named it from the sound”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Lucas Partridge, a high school counselor from Las Vegas, Nevada
Lucas Partridge on Jeopardy!
Amar Kakirde, a policy analyst from Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey
Amar Kakirde on Jeopardy!
Drew Goins, a journalist from Honolulu, Hawaiʻi
Drew Goins on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Our final quarterfinal of the 32nd Tournament of Champions features Drew Goins, Amar Kakirde, and Lucas Partridge. But wait, you say, didn’t Drew lose in Champions Wildcard? Yes, he did—he placed second. However, Lisa Ann Walter was unable to take part in the Tournament of Champions this year due to her commitments to Abbott Elementary—which meant that Drew, as first alternate (as a result of placing second at Champions Wildcard) got to participate in Lisa Ann’s place in the Tournament of Champions.

The prediction model has made Drew the favorite in this game—he has had some very strong performances in his Jeopardy! career–but I do want to caution everyone that even though someone is the favorite, there’s always been a lot of variance in high-level Jeopardy! Any of the three players at this point can catch a favorable (or even unfavorable) set of clues or find the Daily Doubles when they need to.

It certainly would have been nice this morning to actually find the citation for the story used in today’s Final Jeopardy clue; it’s clear that the writers found it from somewhere, though, because there’s zero chance they’re running something that isn’t cited somewhere—my guess is that there’s an old book in their writers’ room that wasn’t digitized anywhere because I plugged what appears to be a direct quote into multiple search engines and got absolutely nowhere.

That being said, while a citation would have been nice to find, that doesn’t get in the way of solving this clue. “Places of Disaster” + “1883” should garner a Pavlovian response for the Krakatoa eruption in Indonesia, a massive volcanic eruption considered one of the most destructive volcanic events in recorded history. With an explosion heard 3,000 miles away near Mauritius, over 36,000 deaths were attributed to both the eruption as well as the resultant tsunamis. Moreover, the sulphur dioxide injected into the stratosphere by the eruption caused significant temperature decreases for a full year worldwide following the eruption. Here’s hoping that we can get something that isn’t a Triple Stumper like quarterfinals #4 and #5 had.

15 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, February 3, 2025"

  1. I spent nearly 45 minutes trying to find this quote somewhere, including in two books I have on Krakatoa in my personal library, and I could find nothing. I did, however, think of Krakatoa as the answer almost immediately.

  2. Could they possibly have taken the quote from the 1968 film “Krakatoa East (I know, the wrong direction unless you go almost 360 degrees) of Java”. If they did, maybe there’s some source for it, or maybe it’s just undocumented lore.

    • Andy, speaking of Pavlovian responses, though I CAN keep from SAYING it, I cannot THINK of “Krakatoa” without actually thinking “Krakatoa, East of Java”!

  3. “1883” and “named it from the sound” helped me come up with Krakatoa. That even amazes me!!!

    Go Drew!!!

  4. Katerina E. | February 3, 2025 at 3:04 pm |

“Sailor” threw me off and I was trying to think of a sea/ocean disaster from 1883. I couldn’t come up with that, and the only body of water I could think of with a name that sounds like the sound of the body of water was Massachusetts Bay (all of the esses sounding like the falling of waves on a shoreline). When time was up, knowing I was wrong and scrolling for the answer, I thought “well, it didn’t have to be a sea disaster, even though it was a sailor who was the source of the quote…” but the year never clicked with Krakatoa for me, regardless.

The category “Places of Disaster” and “an old sailor” made me think of either the Bermuda Triangle or Krakatoa. Since I didn’t know of any sound that’s associated with the Bermuda Triangle, I went with Krakatoa by process of elimination.

    • Today’s clue, then your mention of the Bermuda Triangle both made me think of the volcano La Soufrière located on the Caribbean island of St Vincent because the last time it erupted a search engine told me Soufrière was just the French word for volcano. However, I now find that to not be quite true. “Soufrière” in French translates to
“sulfur mine” in English, but they do use it as a generic term for a volcano and apparently several volcanoes have that as part of their name in addition to it being the whole name of St. Vincent’s. Maybe to be taken with a grain of salt as one search engine main result also says that La Soufrière last erupted in 1979 when I know it erupted in April 2021.

  6. I got it (I remember hearing that story before), but my preferred spelling is Krakatau.

  7. Seems like sound logic
    A volcanic eruption
    Or was it a mouse?

  8. I immediately thought of that volcano eruption, but the “sound” that first came to mind was ‘krakow’! Luckily I KNEW that was a city in Poland, so was able to put that thought aside and quickly remember ‘Krakatoa’.

  9. Yeah, I thought of nothing for FJ.

Way to go Drew on a most dominant win! Retro congrats!

I sure hope that Drew and Neilesh didn’t get unfortunate and drew each other in the Semifinals.

It starts getting really real tomorrow, as we start awarding seats into the Finals that start on Thursday! Should be good!

  10. Okay, the matchups for the 2 Semifinal games are up:

    Match 1

Adriana Harmeyer v. Ryan Manton v. Will Wallace

    I’ll say Ryan will win

    Match 2

Isaac Hirsch v. Mark Fitzpatrick v. Amy Hummel

    I’ll say Isaac will win

    Match 3

Drew Basile v. Drew Goins v. Neilesh Vinjamuri

    I’ll say Neilesh will win

Well dang! Drew Goins and Neilesh Vinjamuri did draw each other. Clearly the most dominant players in the Quarterfinals.

I see Match 1 as being pretty tight. I see Match 2 coming down to a strong fight between Isaac and Mark, but I hope Amy does well! And I see Match 3 as a very tough fight between Drew Goins and Neilesh, not that 7 game winner Drew Basile will just fold.

    Let’s do this!

  11. 3 Semifinal Games!
