Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Bestsellers) for Friday, March 21, 2025 (Season 41, Game 140):

It begins in the village of Juffure & ends in Arkansas more than 200 years & 7 generations later

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Josh Weikert, a politics professor from Collegeville, Pennsylvania
Josh Weikert on Jeopardy!
Steve Luck, an IT manager from Royal Oak, Michigan
Steve Luck on Jeopardy!
Cameron Berry, a data analyst & college administrator from Brighton, Massachusetts (1-day total: $24,600)
Cameron Berry on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Our final game of the week in “Jeopardy! air time” (the first game of a taping day in “Jeopardy! production time”) features challengers Josh Weikert and Steve Luck; they are taking on Massachusetts data analyst Cameron Berry, who picked up five rebounds in yesterday’s game en route to the dethroning of 4-day champion Alex DeFrank. I mentioned this in passing yesterday, but when watching the show at this point, I generally tend to cheer for the returning champion to continue their streak, as there tends to be an increase in interest in the show overall once a player starts to go on a winning streak.

Much like yesterday, there are widespread preemptions due to March Madness for those who watch the show on CBS. Matt Carberry does keep a Google sheet with a list of affected airings; check your local listings! I should also note that oftentimes, the stations—with KZTV in Corpus Christi, Texas being the worst offender for this in my experience in 2025—don’t stick to what the listings on their website say, much to the consternation of viewers and fans. As of right now, the first publicized airing is 10:00 AM Eastern (9:00 AM Central) on KZTV—but if yesterday is any indication, it will actually air at 10:30 AM Eastern (9:30 AM Central).

One more thing, on an editorial bent: Why is it that viewers begging the show to stop asking clues about Kanye West get amplified, whereas viewers begging the show to stop asking clues about J.K. Rowling‘s works get ridiculed? I think we know why. (Actions speak louder than words, by the way.)

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2025 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Roots: The Saga of an American Family (better known as just Roots) is Alex Haley’s 1976 bestseller, telling the story of Kunta Kinte, a young man taken from The Gambia by the toubob (the local term for the Europeans) at the age of 17 and sold as a slave. From there, it details Kunta’s life and his lineage down to Alex Haley himself. It was made into an incredibly highly-rated television miniseries in the late 1970s, which are still some of the most-watched television programs in American history.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • As has happened multiple times in the past, “Is it…?” is in question form and thus is within the show’s rules.
  • Thanks to Mark Barrett for his assistance getting the end of the game after I had to switch over to watch the beginning of the Jeopardy UK episode.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Josh $16,400 Steve $11,800 Cameron $6,400)

Cameron: Bet at least $4,400 to defend against a cover bet from Steve, but you might as well go all in to maximize potential winnings on a correct response. (Actual bet: $6,400)

Steve: Bet between $1,001 and $2,600 and hope for a Triple Stumper. (Actual bet: $6,000)

Josh: Standard cover bet and $7,201. (Actual bet: $7,201)

  1. I’ve watched the miniseries. Was well done.
Would only Roots, be accepted as a correct response?

  2. Loved the book. Loved the mini-series. Instant get.

    • Ditto. Actually, my second thought was that it might have been Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi, but as I did not remember the beginning village nor the ending state for either novel, I decided to go with Roots.

  3. I loved the miniseries ROOTS as a 22 year old in 1977. The show introduced us to LaVar Burton. However I was not able to come up with any response. My bad.

    • Katerina E. | March 21, 2025 at 2:09 pm |

The remake they did a few years back on History Channel introduced us to Rege-Jean Page.

  4. My first thought was maybe this was one of James Michner’s sagas, but he seems to have fallen off the radar somewhat so I doubted he would be a Final Jeopardy these days. My second thought was the right one.

  5. Katerina E. | March 21, 2025 at 1:41 pm |

The first books that I was thinking of were parts of a series that covered a similarly expansive time period, so I knew those were wrong because the category implied a single book. It took a moment of trying to think of such a single-volume story, but at 20 seconds “Roots” finally clicked into place and I knew that had to be it.

  6. I believe I at least started the book, and, viewed some of the (original?) mini series, but the information in the answer clue meant nothing to me.

  7. Robert J. Fawkes | March 21, 2025 at 8:38 pm |

As soon as I saw “Juffure,” I thought instant Triple Get or quadruple get if I included myself. To me, there was really no alternative, at least, I couldn’t think of anything that could be a reasonable substitute.

Apropos to Andy’s comment, I’d be okay with no clues for either West or Rowling.

    • I’d be okay with no clues for either West or Rowling.

Yes, please, and add Henry Ford and Richard Wagner to the list.

  8. My brain and mouth said “It can’t be Roots, right?” So I just stayed away from that guess and had no other idea. I need to go with my 1st instinct!

As for the miniseries. It was on TV in my hospital room in September 1978, as I was laid up as a 10 year old having just had knee surgery. Still got that scar on my left knee.

Have a great weekend everyone! 🙂
