Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, April 3, 2025

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the April 3, 2025, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Fictional Characters) for Thursday, April 3, 2025 (Season 41, Game 149):

Boq is one of these fictional people, “not as big as the grown folk…but neither were they very small”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Alfred Wallace, a librarian from Grand Forks, North Dakota
Alfred Wallace on Jeopardy!
Mary Walheim, a retired risk manager from Berwyn, Pennsylvania
Mary Walheim on Jeopardy!
Bryce Wargin, a post market surveillance coordinator from Kansas City, Missouri (3-day total: $59,400)
Bryce Wargin on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Bryce Wargin enters today’s game as a 3-day champion facing off against Mary Walheim and Alfred Wallace; it’s an important one for Bryce’s Tournament of Champions chances, as he only has a 57.28% chance of qualifying for the Tournament of Champions at the moment. The US version is also the only game airing today; the UK version is being preempted by Grand National coverage and returns on Monday.

One thing that I’ve found when seeing viewer reactions over the years to Jeopardy! games is that I believe that casual viewers overestimate the victory chances of trailing players going into Final Jeopardy when the game is not quite a runaway, especially when compared to a player’s chances of winning when leading. A player, when trailing in second place in a crush position, has a shade under 20% chance of victory. When leading, those chances are north of 60%. (It’s higher than the straight get rate for the leader in Final Jeopardy because second place overbets Final to the point that the leader is often handed victory.) So, yes, even though an incorrect response will often turn a game into a runaway, it’s still the best choice strategically—especially because Daily Doubles do tend to be easier than Final Jeopardy.

In the famous Broadway musical and 2024 film Wicked, Boq is a Munchkin with unrequited love for Glinda, who was turned into the Tin Woodsman from the Wizard of Oz universe.

This definitely needs to be approached with knowledge of Wicked; approaching this with just knowledge of L. Frank Baum will likely end up in frustration today, in my opinion. (And, because people apparently care these days about such minutia—no, I can not count myself among the people who got today’s Final Jeopardy correct, as I have not seen Wicked.)

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Bryce $16,000 Alfred $10,600 Mary $6,000)

Bryce: Standard cover bet is $5,201. Because the margins are so tight here, don’t tack on anything extra. (Actual bet: $5,201)

Mary: You have to be correct to win. Bet at least $4,800. (Actual bet: $5,999)

Alfred: You have to be correct to win, assuming Bryce doesn’t overbet. Bet at least $1,401 to cover Mary—but you’re probably safe to bet up to $9,399 if you want to try to maximize your winnings, because of Mary needing to bet most of her winnings. (Actual bet: $10,000)

16 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, April 3, 2025"

  1. I thought Gulliver’s Travels

    • I also thought lilliputians (assuming that was where you were going)

    • Raul, ditto for me but I took the part of the clue that SEEMED TO ME to say “NOT small” too literally so I went with the giants from ‘Gulliver’s Travels’. Just as well that was incorrect since I can’t spell (and probably can’t even say) “Brobdinagians”.

  2. I guessed hobbits. Haven’t seen nor read Wicked.

  3. I picked the Lilliputians instead of the Munchkins.

    • I did, too, though not sure if they were ‘people’. But then again, not sure that I knew that munchkins were people.

  4. Me too. I saw Wicked on stage a few years ago. Didn’t remember much about it. Was essentially clueless.

  5. Munchkin was my first thought, but I disregarded it as seemed too simple. But I end up being correct. What a surprise for me…

  6. Sadly, my only experience with Wicked (the movie) thus far was tainted due to the circumstances I watched it in. I watched it on a field trip with my school’s choir – and while my guys in the tenor section are usually awesome in every way, they were VERY obnoxious and kinda ruined the second half for me. :/

Nevertheless, this was a pretty quick get for me; considering the stress I’m about to undergo, a simpler Final is always welcome!

(And for those of you who haven’t seen the movie – it’s absolutely fantastic, I highly recommend watching it!)

  7. Didn’t see Wicked, but I thought that Bowen Yang played Boq in the movie and therefore guessed Munchkin. Turns out it was a different actor, so I got the right answer for the wrong reason. That doesn’t happen very often.

  8. I read all the Oz books as a child, plus I’ve seen the musical, and the movie, so for once, this was an easy one for me.

    • I too read all the Oz books as a child (and saw the original movie) and read the “Wicked” book a few years ago and very recently saw the movie. However, though I loved the Oz books and the original movie, they were both very long ago and I only liked the “Wicked” book enough to finish it and only liked the movie enough to pay much attention to the songs (and a little attention to the plot thread). However, I was not even considering any “dwarf-like” characters because I took too literally the part of the clue that seemed to say “NOT small” so I went with the giants from ‘Gulliver’s Travels’. Just as well that was incorrect since I can’t spell (and probably can’t even say) “Brobdinagians”.

  9. Two pop culture FJs this week that I knew! Yay me 😄
    Wicked is amazing.

  10. I’ve never watched Wicked in any form, and, never read Baum’s orginal book. So the answer clue meant nothing to me. Dwarves as a concept did come to me, but not substantial enough to use as an answer,

  11. Had I correctly interpreted the “neither were they very small” from the clue to mean “they were small, but not VERY small”, I don’t know if I would have been able to think of the Munchkins, but I would not have guessed Lilliputians because I always [correctly or not?] thought that they WERE very small.

Upon reading the clue, my thoughts were someone from the peoples in “Gulliver’s Travels,” someone from “The Hobbit,” or someone from “The Wizard of Oz.” I’ve never seen either the “Wicked” musical or the “Wicked” movie so I had to choose from among the other three. I could not think of any character in “Gulliver’s Travels” or in “The Hobbit” by the name of Boq so that only left the Munchkins from “The Wizard of Oz.” By process of elimination, I just happened to stumble upon the correct response.
