Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Contemporary Authors) for Tuesday, August 12, 2025 (Season 41, Game 112):

Asked by a student about the Loch Ness Monster, she said a time portal below could allow a prehistoric creature to pass through

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Neilesh Vinjamuri, a software engineer from Lionville, Pennsylvania (1 win)
Neilesh Vinjamuri on Jeopardy!
Isaac Hirsch, a customer support team lead from Burbank, California (0 wins)
Isaac Hirsch on Jeopardy!
Adriana Harmeyer, an archivist from West Lafayette, Indiana (1 win)
Adriana Harmeyer on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Happy Tuesday! Today is the encore presentation of Game 3 of the 32nd Tournament of Champions Finals. Both Neilesh Vinjamuri and Adriana Harmeyer have a single victory at this point and are hoping to get a second, while Isaac Hirsch—after one game where he led going into Final and a second where he had the best Coryat Score—is still looking for a victory.

One thing that I certainly found notable from a local perspective: when these episodes originally aired back in February, I had been commenting about the weather; St. John’s had just received a significant amount of snow as these episodes were originally airing. In hindsight, that was really the only major snowfall the city received this past winter, which has led to the major drought and wildfire conditions that the city and province are experiencing, as these episodes are in encore presentations. Where I am in the metro area, all I have had to do is make sure windows have been closed for air quality reasons; however, the wildfires are coming closer, and parts of a pair of western suburbs were on evacuation alert overnight. The forecasts are saying some much-needed rain is due within the next 72 to 96 hours; we shall see if that arrives.

Correct response: Who is Diana Gabaldon?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2025 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Diana Gabaldon is the author of the series of novels that began with 1991’s Outlander, featuring World War II nurse Claire Beauchamp, who travels through time and finds romance with Highland warrior Jamie Fraser. The series was also transformed into a TV series starring Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan. With time travel serving as a major part of the series, it comes as no surprise that she would believe that the Loch Ness Monster could appear as a result of a time portal below.

On her website, she recounts a letter that she sent to Olivia Perfetti, who was a sixth-grade student in Pittsburgh at the time. Basically, Gabaldon said that the Loch doesn’t have enough biomass to support a breeding population of monsters that size, which means the only way Nessie could exist is if there was a “time-portal under Loch Ness, which would occasionally allow a prehistoric creature to pass through it.”
