Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, August 4, 2025

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the August 4, 2025, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that today’s game is an encore presentation of the game that originally aired on February 3, 2025.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Places of Disaster) for Monday, August 4, 2025 (Season 41, Game 106):

In 1883 an old sailor didn’t know what its name meant but believed the natives “named it from the sound”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Lucas Partridge, a high school counselor from Las Vegas, Nevada
Lucas Partridge on Jeopardy!
Amar Kakirde, a policy analyst from Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey
Amar Kakirde on Jeopardy!
Drew Goins, a journalist from Honolulu, Hawaiʻi
Drew Goins on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

The encore presentations of the 32nd Tournament of Champions continue with the last of the six quarterfinals, between Drew Goins, Amar Kakirde, and Lucas Partridge.

As I wrote back in February, “Lisa Ann Walter was unable to take part in the Tournament of Champions this year due to her commitments to Abbott Elementary—which meant that Drew, as first alternate (as a result of placing second at Champions Wildcard) got to participate in Lisa Ann’s place in the Tournament of Champions. The prediction model has made Drew the favorite in this game—he has had some very strong performances in his Jeopardy! career–but I do want to caution everyone that even though someone is the favorite, there’s always been a lot of variance in high-level Jeopardy! Any of the three players at this point can catch a favorable (or even unfavorable) set of clues or find the Daily Doubles when they need to.”

Here’s what I wrote back in February about this clue:

It certainly would have been nice this morning to actually find the citation for the story used in today’s Final Jeopardy clue; it’s clear that the writers found it from somewhere, though, because there’s zero chance they’re running something that isn’t cited somewhere—my guess is that there’s an old book in their writers’ room that wasn’t digitized anywhere because I plugged what appears to be a direct quote into multiple search engines and got absolutely nowhere.

That being said, while a citation would have been nice to find, that doesn’t get in the way of solving this clue. “Places of Disaster” + “1883” should garner a Pavlovian response for the Krakatoa eruption in Indonesia, a massive volcanic eruption considered one of the most destructive volcanic events in recorded history. With an explosion heard 3,000 miles away near Mauritius, over 36,000 deaths were attributed to both the eruption as well as the resultant tsunamis. Moreover, the sulphur dioxide injected into the stratosphere by the eruption caused significant temperature decreases for a full year worldwide following the eruption. Here’s hoping that we can get something that isn’t a Triple Stumper like quarterfinals #4 and #5 had.
