We went through GEORGE TOWN, YOU SEE “L.A.”, and COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES first. At the end of 15 clues, the scores were:
Daniel $3,000
Jim $2,800
Kristen $2,600
Daniel has spent time as a soccer referee; an interesting interview topic considering what has happened in the news recently!
Coming out of the break, Daniel went out of order to pick EMERSON $600 and found the Daily Double there! Scores were:
Daniel $3,200
Jim $2,800
Kristen $2,600
Daniel bet all $3,200. His clue: Emerson helped start this literary movement in New England with his 1836 work “Nature”. His immediate correct response brought him to $6,400.
There were a bunch of negs coming in over the final 13 clues, but Daniel did manage to keep his score around the same level.
I bet Jeanie got this Triple Stumper (BALL STATE $1000): New balls,
as in the umpire’s traditional request “new balls please”.
Scores at the end of 30:
Daniel $6,400
Jim $4,400
Kristen $2,200
DJ! round categories:

PHYSIOLOGY $1600 saw the first Daily Double very early on. Daniel got to play this one as well! Scores were:
Daniel $8,000
Jim $4,400
Kristen $3,400
Daniel bet $3,000. His clue: This tube that splits into 2 bronchi widens & lengthens slightly with each breath taken in. Another correct response put him at $11,000.
Being Canadian, yes, I did get the “Tegan & Sara” Triple Stumper at the bottom of MUSIC MAKERS.
Meanwhile, Jim and Kristen started getting into the act as well, and all three players were into five figures by the time the final Daily Double. Kristen played it on the round’s 22nd clue, at U.S. VOLCANOES $1200. Scores were:
Daniel $13,400
Kristen $11,400
Jim $9,800
Kristen bet $2,000. Her clue: It’s on the southeastern flank of Mauna Loa, & its name means “spewing” in Hawaiian. She went for Mauna Kea and fell to $9,400.
There was some controversy online over Jim’s accepted answer to the following clue at the bottom of MY BROTHER’S IN THE SERVICE: My brother’s cool with this big change to the rules about combat troops announced Jan. 24, 2013. Jim said “the inclusion of women in the military”; I believe they should have required “combat situations”.
Scores going into FJ:
Daniel $15,400
Jim $14,800
Kristen $11,000
FJ! category: CHARACTERS IN SHAKESPEARE
FJ! clue: This character said to represent Shakespeare’s philosophy has a name that means “fortunate” in Latin
Kristen 11000 + 8000 = 19000
Jim 14800 + 5201 = 20001
Daniel 15400 – 1400 = 14000
Jim’s an automatic semifinalist; I’ll be back tomorrow with another recap!
