America was very familiar with Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker prior to its first American full performance by the San Francisco Ballet company on Christmas Eve 1944; the Nutcracker Suite of eight songs from the ballet (including “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy”) was very popular worldwide, to the point that it had been included in Disney’s Fantasia in 1940.
Today, performances of The Nutcracker are so popular around Christmastime that the revenues from its performances often cover a ballet company’s yearly expenses.
