Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, March 19, 2021

It’s Friday, March 19, 2021, the end of the week and Katie Couric’s last day of hosting the show. Over Couric’s first 9 days of guest-hosting Jeopardy!, the show has raised $200,703 for Stand Up to Cancer. What will today bring? Today’s Final Jeopardy is:

Artists: The February 17, 1901 death of his friend Carles Casagemas made this grief-stricken artist change his color palette

(correct response beneath the contestants)

The Jeopardy! community is mourning the loss of Brayden Smith, who passed away on February 5. The Brayden Smith Memorial Fund has been established, dedicated to furthering the educational aspirations of Southern Nevada students.

Today’s contestants:

Nick Cascone, an orthopedic physician assistant originally from Queens, New York
Nick Cascone on Jeopardy!
Jilana Rose-Silverberg, a data analyst originally from Madison, Wisconsin
Jilana Rose-Silverberg on Jeopardy!
Morgan Briles, a librarian from Nacogdoches, Texas (2-day total: $37,200)
Morgan Briles on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Morgan has gone 2-for-2 on Final Jeopardy and it’s propelled her to two victories. Will today be the day that we see a 3-day champion? Morgan was much better on the signalling device yesterday (21 times in first instead of 15 on Wednesday); she’ll need to keep that up in order to have a good chance of winning today.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to receive vaccinations as soon as it becomes available to you, and for you to keep wearing your masks properly. Ensure your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Pablo Picasso’s “Blue Period” was a result of the death of fellow painter Carles Casagemas (who had been stricken with depression over his being unable to consummate a relationship with the woman he loved); this period was characterized by works tinted blue and blue-green; several posthumous portraits of Casagamas are a part of this period, including 1903’s La Vie.

  1. I cannot believe that no one picked up on the fact that Morgan did not phrase her answer in the form of a question in the category about Ad Slogans. The clue was “Loreal: _____ you’re worth it” and she answered “BECAUSE you’re worth it” and she and Katie had a chuckle. My husband rewound the play to be sure, and she did not saw “What is BECAUSE you’re worth it.” I found it astounding that no one came back after the break or prior to final jeopardy with a “scoring update” to point out her mistake. I have never seen something like that get past the judges before.

    • Liz:

It didn’t get past the judges. In fact, Katie even said “Remember your phrasing.”

For the entire history of the show, even dating back to the days of Art Fleming, failing to phrase is a warning if it comes in the Jeopardy! Round. It’s only in Double Jeopardy or on a Daily Double where you are penalized for failing to phrase.
