It’s Monday, March 22, 2021, the start of a new week on Jeopardy!. Katie Couric’s 10 episodes raised $230,504 for Stand Up to Cancer. Now, Dr. Oz takes the reins for two weeks. Unfortunately, his episodes taped before the fan base (and many former contestants) were able to express their extreme displeasure towards the move. Healthcorps, Inc. is Dr. Oz’s selected charity, and I’m sure he’ll talk more about it during his hosting stint. That said, I know that a lot of fans are going to boycott these episodes. Heck, I wish I could. To me, his support for conversion therapy has arguably led to lives being lost, is unconscionable, and shows a lack of understanding towards the LGBTQIA+ community. On that note, here’s today’s Final Jeopardy:
Shakespearean References: This name given to U.K. labor strife in Dec. 1978 & Jan. 1979 was taken from the first line of a Shakespeare history play
(correct response beneath the contestants)
The Jeopardy! community is mourning the loss of Brayden Smith, who passed away on February 5. The Brayden Smith Memorial Fund has been established, dedicated to furthering the educational aspirations of Southern Nevada students.
Today’s contestants:
David Eadington, an operations manager from Long Beach, California![]() |
Kathryn Peters, a research center executive director from Carrboro, North Carolina![]() |
Nick Cascone, an orthopedic physician assistant originally from Queens, New York (1-day total: $26,801)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Nick was very strong on Friday, but his opposition today is very strong. An opponent with past quiz bowl experience are always going to give a returning champion a hard time. Nick’s saving grace might be the fact that he was so strong on the signalling device on Friday. If he loses that, though, he’s going to find himself in trouble.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to abide by physical distancing guidelines and when you are not able to do so, properly wear a mask. Ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: What is The Winter of Discontent?
More information about Final Jeopardy: (The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2021 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
“The Winter of Discontent” comes from the first line of Shakespeare’s Richard III; the late-70s event was given its name in a May 1979 Sun editorial. On the surface, public sector trade unions wished a greater pay raise than the government was offering (private sector unions around the same period had received significantly larger pay raises, for the record), and James Callaghan’s inability to effectively deal with the issues (at one point, he made front page news with “Crisis? What crisis?”) directly led to Margaret Thatcher’s election as Prime Minister. Thatcher became incredibly well-known for her anti-labor policies in the 1980s.
On a more Jeopardy! end of things, I haven’t seen the episode yet, and I don’t know if the judges are going to take “Winter of our discontent”. I can see why they would, and I could also see why they wouldn’t. (On an unrelated note, “Winter of our Discontent” could certainly be used to describe how many fans and former contestants feel about our current guest host.)

Andy’s Thoughts:
- With no basketball games on CBS tomorrow, the schedule returns to normal.
- I’m glad that the judges took Kathryn’s response; I could have seen them going the other way, but it would have been incredibly persnickety of them to do so.
- As I said in my Pregame Thoughts, past quiz bowl experiences generally will translate over well to Jeopardy! – at least in terms of knowledge base.
- Thus far, $23,001 has been donated to Healthcorps, Inc.

I just know that I watched Alex for many years, and and have no idea how he voted. That’s the way it should be.
I hope we finally have another multigame winner.
Oz was fine. I’ve enjoyed all the games that have been played since Alex’s passing, regardless of host. I’m confident Jeopardy will continue to go strong, whomever they pick.
I’d bet the first person to agree would be Alex himself. He always said in interviews that he wasn’t the star of the show, the game and the contestants were. On Wheel, Sajak and White are introduced each night as “the stars of our show”. Alex insisted on being introduced as “the host of Jeopardy!”.
I think Alex Trebek would be pleased that all of the hosts have done so far. As much as I am a fan of Ken Jennings, I was very impressed with Mike Richards and Katie Couric. I could never miss Jeopardy because Alex is no longer here, and I know he would definitely not want anyone to abandon the show for any reason. I was blown away that I got tonight’s Shakespearean references Final Jeopardy correct. It was fairly difficult, but what clued me in where are the months that were listed in the clue. Long may Jeopardy wave!
Yeah the first Oz episode didn’t do it for me. He’s not awful awful or anything but he is easily the worst one yet.
Dr. Oz was OK. You could tell he hasn’t done this before. But if you didn’t know he was the “infamous” Dr. Oz, you might just say he’s got to find his groove, as his immediate predecessors did. They’ve all been OK. Richards and Jennings probably a cut above.
I agree completely with Andy that it is a total insult to Alex’s legacy to have this man host. I was telling a friend of mine last week that that awful snake oil salesman was going to be the next guest host. When I opened the site today it cracked me up to see the Dr. Oz snake oil shirt, definitely appropriate to describe that despicable person.
Andy: Would you explain both sides of the “winter of OUR discontent” issue? Thanks.
Sure. The event in the UK was known as simply “Winter of Discontent” — no “our”, even though the Shakespeare line included the “our”.
So, it’s a matter of “how much of a stickler do the judges want to be here?” It’s a judgement call, in my opinion.
Thanks.
I dislike Oz but thought he did fine. He is the host of a show, like Couric, and also like Richards, so you expect them to do well and they do. I don’t care for him, he’s the definition of smarmy. Couric was very engaging. The only issue I found with her was that she was too smiley, which is just not to my tastes but you can’t really fault someone for smiling, I suppose. Fave by a mile so far is Mike Richards.
#1 Mike Richards
#2 Katie Couric and Ken Jennings
#4 Dr. Oz
It’s fun to see how well different people do. I can’t remember all of the chosen guest hosts but I believe the only two that aren’t hosts of any kind or who appear on shows as segment reporters are Mayim Bialik and Aaron Rodgers? Very curious how those two will do with the very fast pace and lots and lots of talking and reading.
