Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, August 5, 2021

Today is Day #4 of David Faber’s hosting stint; through 3, $86,400 has been donated thus far to the Robin Hood Foundation. Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 1930s America) for Thursday, August 5, 2021 (Season 37, Game 224):

Unpopular at the time, the man for whom it is named wasn’t invited to the September 30, 1935 dedication of this landmark

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

James Weldon, an emerging markets investor from Cambridge, Massachusetts
James Weldon on Jeopardy!
Ashley Rayner, a librarian from Chicago, Illinois
Ashley Rayner on Jeopardy!
Matt Amodio, a Ph.D student from New Haven, Connecticut (11-day total: $368,600)
Matt Amodio on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Matt lost $37,000 in Final Jeopardy! yesterday; I think the most interesting thing about that will be if there are any knock-on effects from having done so. If Matt is able to avoid dwelling on what happened, he should be just as dominant. However, if that loss in yesterday’s episode affects his play today, he could be at risk of being taken down by one of today’s challengers.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Oh, the irony of Jeopardy! talking about something unpopular the day after Variety leaked a potentially unpopular decision from the show.

Onto the subject of this Final: The dam now known as the Hoover Dam was originally named after the sitting president, Herbert Hoover, at the beginning of its construction in 1930. However, before its completion in 1935, it was renamed to Boulder Dam. Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes, who was behind the name change, was not a fan of the previous President, especially as Hoover had shouldered most of the blame for the Great Depression. The name “Hoover Dam” was restored to the structure in Black Canyon in 1947.

Matt is more quick witted than James H. Matt may be able to beat Ken Jennings.

  2. Brad (not Rutter) | August 5, 2021 at 9:31 pm |

Let’s not get carried away. Matt has a lot of work to do just to catch Jason. (Streak-wise).

…Mike Richards the choice? …but not Ken Jennings nor Buzzy Cohen as possibilities? They did so well.
