Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, May 6, 2022

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category USA) for Friday, May 6, 2022 (Season 38, Game 170):

These 2 mayors gave their names to a facility built on the site of an old racetrack owned by Coca-Cola magnate Asa Candler

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Danielle Maurer, a digital marketing manager from Peachtree Corners, Georgia
Danielle Maurer on Jeopardy!
Betsy Hobbs, a senior operations manager originally from Thornton, Illinois
Betsy Hobbs on Jeopardy!
Mattea Roach, a tutor from Toronto, Ontario, Canada (23-day total: $560,983)
Mattea Roach on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Mattea Roach has moved to 23 victories after her dramatic come-from-behind victory in yesterday’s game. Betsy Hobbs and Danielle Maurer hope to end that streak today. A couple of statistical or housekeeping notes: A player with at least 10 wins has never lost on a Friday, and whoever wins today gets to meet Mayim Bialik (again in Mattea’s case), as Mayim will be hosting next week’s games.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

More information about Final Jeopardy: (The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2022 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Things can work both ways! On Tuesday, champion Mattea got a Final Jeopardy! clue about O Canada; today, challenger Danielle gets a Final Jeopardy! about her home airport. Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport began its life as Candler Field in the 1920s; the Coca-Cola tycoon owned an abandoned auto racetrack on the site; it was then renamed Atlanta Municipal Airport in 1942 and William B. Hartsfield Atlanta Airport in 1971, after the recently deceased former mayor. Another deceased mayor, Maynard Jackson, had his name appended to the airport’s name in 2003.

As I mentioned yesterday, the website issues that the Jeopardy! website had in early April conclude today, with today’s Final Jeopardy! showing up as the New York Times Clue of the Day on April 6 instead of May 6; once again, I assume that a website operator accidentally typoed a month in the date, with there being two April 6 clues (and only one running) on the website and none for May 6. The same issue happened yesterday.

Game Recap:

Jeopardy! Round categories: Modern Royalty; Ethnic Groups; Padding the Show; International Computer Glossary; 2 First Names?; New to the OED

Mattea got off to a very strong start today, picking up 11 correct before the interviews! However, it was Danielle who got to the Daily Double after the break; she doubled up to cut well into Mattea’s advantage after Single Jeopardy, but Mattea still held the lead!

Double Jeopardy! Round categories: World Geography; Historical Fiction; Protestants; Our Brand’s On That; 4 “N”; Affairs

The Daily Doubles got split again in this round—Mattea went conservative, betting only $3,000 on hers, whereas Danielle went more aggressive, picking up $5,000 on hers on a response that started just before the buzzer! This means that Mattea didn’t have a runaway today! Scores going into Final were Mattea at $19,200, with Danielle at $11,400 and Betsy just out of contention at $7,400.

In Final, Atlanta native Danielle got Final, and that was enough for her to take victory—by a single dollar! Mattea will be back in November for the Tournament of Champions, and Danielle will be meeting Mayim Bialik on Monday!

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • I put a stopwatch on Danielle’s final Daily Double response; she started it in under 10 seconds. This is well within past precedent.
  • Link to the box score: May 6, 2022 Box Score
  • Final Jeopardy! betting suggestions:
    (Mattea $19,200 Danielle $11,400 Betsy $7,400)

Mattea: Standard cover bet today is $3,601.

Betsy: You can’t win unless Mattea overbets; the more money you have, though, the better your chances of a miracle!

Danielle: You need to get to at least $15,600; your minimum bet today is $4,200. You can bet up to everything, though, in order to maximize your potential winnings.

    1. I got the Coke = Atlanta connection but got hung up on the two names – I think of the ATL airport as Hartsfield. I guess the Jackson part never made it into my memory. In my defense, I probably haven’t flown throught it since it was renamed in 2003, but I flew a whole lot on business in the 80’s and 90’s and often made connections there when it was just plain Hartsfield.

I will miss Mattea. I liked that she was visibly having fun and didn’t take herself too seriously despite being wicked smart.

I’m honestly surprised that only one got this. The topic of busiest airport in the USA (via passenger volume) comes up almost every Thanksgiving and Christmas, and CNN HQ being in Atlanta always covers the getaway period with a newspiece from the airport. ATL has beat out LAX, JFK, and DFW for as long as I can remember now. Being well-travelled might be a key here, not necessarily being from the Peach State.

    3. Congrats to both Winners! A great run for Mattea who will be missed. Welcome back Mayim. I can hear everything you say with your perfect diction. Thank you!! Canadian fan 😁🇨🇦

    4. “A player with at least 10 wins has never lost on a Friday”
I blame you for jinxing her! (you know, despite the fact that you probably typed that today, and this game took place in mid-February… )
I have to chuckle how so many internet trolls that the game was “rigged” in favor of the superchamps, and then they come along with a FJ question that was tailor-made for one of the challengers. (no, I’m not one of those conspiracy theorists; but the coincidence amuses me)

    5. Brad (not Rutter) | May 6, 2022 at 9:42 pm |

      That sucked.

    6. Yup, like many of you, I was like “Coke… must be somewhere in Georgia, probably Atlanta…” and my mind blanked on dual-named things there. It’s just “Atlanta Airport” to me.

I’m gonna miss Mattea. She was scrapping her way through win after win, and it was glorious. But I knew this was going to happen eventually. Danielle now gets her reaction added to “Giant Slayer” reels. Gave me flashbacks to Rhone.

    7. What was the taping date of the show that aired on May 6?

    8. Great run for Mattea, and good timing with the LSAT possibly on its way out.

    9. By my count, just 37 unique champions on the j-archive through 160 regular play episodes this season, which has to be a record by a mile. Even Ken’s original streak split seasons, so it would not have dominated just one season like Amy, and Mattea, and the 2nd half of Matt Amodio (and Jonathan too!). Not to mention a couple 5-day champs and several 4-day champs in there too! I know firsthand how difficult playing a 4-day champion is, and I do not envy this season’s contestants.

    10. I’m guessing that statistically, having only 12 correct responses and 21% first in on the buzzer would trend toward the low end as far as game-winning performances go. (especially when going against a long-running champ).

    11. Curious, did Mattea just get her math wrong? With her lead why did she bet. The category was USA, a very broad topic. I know they wager before the question is given but this seems like a real oops.

      • As someone with a very broad knowledge base and being in the lead, it doesn’t seem at all unreasonable for Mattea to have bet on both herself being correct and her nearest competitor getting it right and possibly betting all they have. So she bet exactly what I would have bet, but she got unlucky on two counts (her specific knowledge, and the hometown of her very worthy opponent).

A side note is that I enjoyed Ken’s humor more and more over time, and he’s really made the show his. As much as I like Mayim, I will miss Ken.

      • Connie:

Did you read the post you were replying to? If you did, you’d have seen that Mattea’s bet matched the suggested one from the post.

      • Mattea’s bet would have beaten Danielle by $1 had Danielle doubled up and Mattea been correct.

🙁 Mattea lost AND I broke my FJ win streak ;p What else can go wrong!😅
