Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Actresses & Their Roles) for Tuesday, May 9, 2023 (Season 39, Game 172):
She made her big screen debut as a teen named Laurie in a 1978 film & in 2022 she played that role for the 7th & last time
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Joe Forti, a project manager originally from Windham, New Hampshire![]() |
Raquel Matta, a copy editor from San Pablo, California![]() |
Hannah Wilson, a data scientist from Chicago, Illinois (4-day total: $124,801)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Hannah Wilson of Chicago won her 4th game last night and has been averaging over $30,000 an episode. Regardless of what happens from here on out, I definitely think that Hannah is very capable of both a good regular-play run as well as a Tournament of Champions run. Today's challengers are Raquel Matta and Joe Forte; Raquel was a contestant on Sports Jeopardy! back in 2016.

Correct response: Who is Jamie Lee Curtis?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2023 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
Jamie Lee Curtis, daughter of Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis one of the famed modern "scream queens", had a few guest roles on TV shows in the late 1970s, but she came to prominence with her first film role as Laurie Strode in John Carpenter's horror film Halloween. The film, a massive box-office success, saw Curtis reprise her role over half a dozen times.
I quite like this Final Jeopardy! clue—it's one of those clues that both has a modern angle (the reference to 2022s Halloween Ends) as well as feeling like it would be a worthy Final Jeopardy! clue in any of the show's 39 seasons.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- I’ve already said what I need to in my recap above regarding Raquel’s bet; however, this also demonstrates why it’s not a good idea to make anything higher than the standard cover bet out of the lead.
- Today’s box score: May 9, 2023 Box Score.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Hannah $26,000 Raquel $14,400 Joe $5,800)
Hannah: Standard cover bet over Raquel is $2,801. (Actual bet: $3,000)
Raquel: You must bet at least $8,801 to have any chance of winning. (Actual bet: $8,000)
Joe: Limit your bet to $199; that way, if Raquel makes her minimum suggested bet, you stay ahead of her. (Actual bet: $5,798)

I was hoping to see a triple solve today but still though today’s players were strong. I was certain Raquel would have won today. No matter. Hannah is the new streaker of May 2023. I’ve seen Jamie Lee Curtis many times
Raquel played such a great game and seemed really on top of things. Almost inconceivable she would make such bad wager. Did she mis-calculate? Guesss well never know for sure. Hannah will remember this one when she breaks Ken’s record.
Raquel said she knew betting strategy and miscalculated her wager. It pained me to see the look on her face at the end of the game.
In such a case, bet it all since you aren’t going to win if you get the answer wrong anyway. In a pressure situation, too many things can go wrong in one’s calculations as we saw.
I agree, or at least bet enough to be force the first place contestant to get the Final correct.
Thanks for that! I read her quoted post (from J-board) just this morning on the Jeopardy reddit. I figured that was probably what had happened. I guess a lesson to take away from this is to not eschew the use of pencil and paper to check your math, even if you’re comfortable doing it in your head.
Yeah, equivalent to the carpentry rule “measure twice, cut once” (quoted in a book at least as far back as 1591).
[I have read that double-checking your math on paper (or even on your fingers) can lead your brain to laziness in actually remembering how to do it in your head, but Jeopardy! is not the time to practice.]
Yay! Horror is not my favorite genre, but the Final Jeopardy! clues led me to choose Jamie Lee Curtis. It’s too bad about Raquel not betting enough in Final!
Andy, does the name Barbara Lowe vollick mean anything to you? Their was an article on the ringer.com about her.she appeared on Jeopardy in 1986. Interesting story
Well, considering that Andy was quoted multiple times IN THE STORY… yep, he’s aware of Barbara. 😉
