Andy’s Weekly Thoughts: November 6–November 10, 2023

We’re through another week of episodes of Jeopardy, which means another week of Thoughts!

Eight Million People Are Watching

For all the doom and gloom that the “diehard” fans on Reddit are trying to paint, it’s not transferring over to the ratings department.

Nielsen still posts the weekly Top 10 over at its website — and its news is good news for Jeopardy! For the week of October 23–29 (the posted ratings as of this writing), Jeopardy! saw an average of just over 8 million viewers that week and pulled a rating of 4.8 (As a reminder, this was for quarterfinals 2 through 6 of Champions Wildcard Diamonds). It is still the highest-rated program in syndication and pulled nearly as many overall viewers as Game 2 of the World Series (which saw just over 100,000 more viewers than Jeopardy! did.)

If you take the NFL and the World Series out of the equation, Jeopardy is the second-most watched program on American television after 60 Minutes. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Jeopardy!‘s ratings, which tells me that the average television viewer has no major qualms with the content the show is putting out.

My friends over at Geeks Who Drink have introduced a daily trivia game—Thrice! Existing to make daily clever trivia content accessible to a wide audience, it's a daily challenge that tries to get you to the answer via three separate clues. It has a shareable score functionality to challenge your friends and new questions every day will give you a new daily social ritual. You can find it at thricegame.com.

I Really Hope The Delay Unveiling The Clubs Field Doesn’t Become The Norm

It was very disappointing not to see the Champions Wildcard Clubs field unveiled until the afternoon of Thursday—after the first game had begun airing in many Central Time Zone markets. There’s nothing wrong with unveiling the quarterfinalists on the weekend beforehand—all that will do is give the fans more time to get excited for the return of their favorite players, and the writers more time to put out better-researched and better-written articles. Matt Carberry wrote on Thursday before the unveiling that this delay felt like “what would be equivalent to the NFL having the Week 1 early games kick off, with the schedule only released through Week 4 (out of 18).” I hope this doesn’t happen again, especially as competitions kick off midweek. (Though, I don’t mind waiting until 8 PM Pacific that night for pairings in cases where future pairings or lineups might hinge on that night’s results.)

We Won’t Be Seeing UK Jeopardy Until 2024

A quick follow-up to my comments last week on UK Jeopardy: TV Zone UK reported last night that the UK version won’t be airing until 2024. I’m expecting an early January release at this point. I’ve heard good things from my sources in the UK about this series (just 20 episodes) and that the January release could end up highlighting the show more than a Fall 2023 release would have.

Thanks To Everyone Who Supported Gamers Vs. MS!

Thank you very much to everyone who supported the Gamers vs. MS charity relay over the past seven days — over $18,000 was raised for MS Canada to both help fund a cure for multiple sclerosis and give support to those who are suffering from MS.

I myself will be doing another charity livestream or two in November—those dates are to be announced.

In Closing

We’ve only got about a month left of “strike replacement programming,” and I’m sure next week’s games will be awesome to watch. I hope you enjoy them!

  1. Hi Andy,

Yes, the delay in announcing the contestants for the Clubs bracket was definitely frustrating. The only reason that I knew the contestants for the first 2 games was due to their site having the contestants for the week, which included Thursday and Friday of course. I like to see players in the bracket and then come here and see when they played and read some of the recaps.

I’m kind of a numbers nut and write down a few things regarding each player on paper. I’m 55, so I’m old school. LOL.

I have booked a ticket to go and see the morning taping on December 5th and can’t wait. I went October 24th ,2022 and it was a blast. Now I just need to ask for the day off when I go back to work on Monday.

So Jeopardy is the number two non-sports program, and, the number one Syndicated program according the Nielsens. It’s a remarkable acheievement considering the many different time slots Jeopardy is shown in. Despite it’s mistakes, Sony should be proud about carrying on the stewardship left by Merv Griffin, Harry Friedman, and, Alex Trebek. Let’s hope that they continue to learn from their past mistakes, and, keep Jeopardy moving forward
