Andy’s Weekly Thoughts (3/16): Good News For Haters + A Stats Correction?

It’s the weekend following what’s been quite an incredible week of Jeopardy! play.

Here are my thoughts on a few things that have come up:

A Prediction Surrounding The Start Of Regular Play

Regular play, at this point, is going to begin at some point in the week of April 8; it could begin as early as the 8th or as late as the 12th. I have a bold prediction that I’d like to make, though, especially in the context that Games 1–4 of the Final have only seen 9 Triple Stumpers combined.

My prediction: At least half of April’s regular play games will see more than 9 Triple Stumpers.

Why? I’m fully expecting a reduction in the quality of play with the return to regular play—and I’m sure hoping that the viewers who want that are happy with what’s going to happen over the coming months.

Good News For The Tournament-Haters

For those of you who prefer regular play and missed the announcement this week on Inside Jeopardy!, once the Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament ends, there will be no more tournament play in syndication until early 2025. Interestingly, if the Season 41 postseason begins on January 8, 2025, that would mean that we have somewhere between 160 and 165 games of regular play before the next postseason—which is about the amount that Michael Davies was hoping for when he made the schedule changes that he did.

Again, the fact that we’re dropping to that many games of regular play a season is by design—it is 100% adjusting to the changes in the broadcast landscape and preparing for the eventuality that no streaming service is going to be interested in footing the production costs of the number of “regular” Jeopardy! episodes that are currently being produced for syndication. It’s a new normal that viewers are going to need to get used to; the years of 190–200 regular-play episodes a season are done and buried.

So, What Is The Highest Daily Double Bet In J! History?

In the opening to Game 3, Ken Jennings said that Troy Meyer’s Game 2 Daily Double bet was the third-highest Daily Double bet in the show’s history.

There’s one problem with that: it wasn’t. At least, whether it is or not depends on whether or not Jeopardy! Masters counts (and I certainly think it should).

There’s no disputing what the highest regular-play bets are: They both currently belong to James Holzhauer, who bet $25,000 twice during his regular run. The problem is the $25,600 bet that James made during the last quarterfinal of Jeopardy! Masters. I’m guessing here that J!‘s stats department missed the Masters bet (whether that was an accidental or deliberate omission is still yet to be seen.)

What’s Up The Rest Of The Weekend

Tomorrow, I am aiming for a Mailbag post as well as a preview of the Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament.

Enjoy next week—it’s sure going to be interesting!

  1. When I began reading your opinion that regular play would have a lot of triple stumpers, I expected you to say that it would be due to the writers having gone from being on strike to writing for various tournaments and would have their thinking stuck in the higher-difficulty vein.

I don’t believe you were implying that viewers would be disappointed in that, but I feel like they like them to occur because if the viewer didn’t know it either, they feel on par with the contestants and if they do know it they momentarily feel superior.

  2. Less than 200+ regular season games is certainly what I am used to, beginning with the first game of the newest season in September, then ending with the last new game of July. And that includes the TOF. I assume now less games with new contestants will be the new normal.
