Arriving from Corsica, held by the French just to the north, they attempted an attack on the island of Sardinia. Both attacks, directed at Cagliari on the island’s southern coast and La Maddalena, were failures; today, the attacks are likely best known due to the participation of a young Napoleon Bonaparte. The aftermath, which saw accusations that Corsican leader Pasquale Paoli had sabotaged the attacks, led to Napoleon leading a French attack on Corsica and subsequent banishment to France for the future leader.
This should be a relatively straightforward clue for anyone who knows Mediterranean geography well and can keep their directions straight. Sardinia is a major non-French island lying directly south of a French island, which is probably the best way in for anyone unfamiliar with Napoleon’s early military participation.

Not even close. Knowing that Mauritius is French speaking and it’s close to Madagascar, I went with Madagascar.
Hopefully remembering the category will prevent others from making the same mistake.
doh! yeah, I wasn’t even paying attention to the category when I made that guess. Not that I would have gotten it if I had been.
I remembered the category, but like Marko, my geography was way off.For some reason I was thinking French colonies in the Carribbean. At least Madagascar is in the same general hemisphere.
My grandfather was born and raised in that part of the Mediterranean so this was rather straightforward to me. Two of the contestants were, at least, kind of close with responses of Corsica and Corsica with a strikethrough. They knew the general area.
Can’t believe this got missed: the answer was Dylan’s Blowin’ in the Wind. The contestant said, with nails on the blackboard clarity, Blowing in the Wind. It passed, unchallenged.
It wasn’t “missed” or “unchallenged” by the judges.
As per the rules of Jeopardy, -in’ and -ing are treated identically in responses unless there is a specific circumstance where they would not be synonymous.
Unlike the time someone was later ruled incorrect when they said ‘Gangster’s paradise” instead of “Gangsta’s Paradise” (almost seven years ago).
Exactly—in that case, the show determined that “Gangster” and “Gangsta” are not synonymous.
I thought Lisa answered “Pierre”lachaise to the cemetery clue and that the judges would have corrected into Pere but no. Did anyone else hear that added syllable?
Contestants are allowed to correct themselves before rulings; her correction was more “Pier”, a reasonable pronunciation of the letters “Pere” that was correctly accepted by the judges.
Reading comments, complaints, and, questions about acceptibility of responses, makesme appreciate those from the production staff working as judges during episodes. They not only have to interpret what the answer clue says (and, doesn’t say,) they also have interpret contestants oral responses during the “main game,” as well as their sometimes scribbled responses during Final Jeopardy. I know today those at the judges table have nearly instantaneous access to all kinds of research material, and, to isolated replays of contestants oral responses. But I still think it can be a difficult job at times. We should all take our (proverbial) hats off to them.
