Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category The Southwest) for Thursday, February 20, 2025 (Season 41, Game 119):
The 4-syllable name of this city is almost identical to its namesake town in Spain, except that the Spanish one has an extra “R”
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Jackie Kelly, a developer originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania![]() |
Troy Meyer, a music executive originally from Cleveland, Ohio![]() |
Raymond Goslow, a library technology consultant from Marietta, Georgia![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
The Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament continues today with quarterfinal #4, featuring Raymond Goslow, Troy Meyer, and Jackie Kelly. Raymond finished second to Jaskaran Singh in the primetime college tournament held on ABC back in 2022 after having a strong tournament, while Jackie Kelly was a 4-time champion in Season 38 who was competitive in the 30th Tournament of Champions. Our third player in this game, though, is a player that a lot of fans think will go far in this tournament—Troy Meyer. He was a 6-time champion who reached the finals of the 31st Tournament of Champions before falling to Yogesh Raut in the final. The Unified Prediction Model also has Troy as the favorite to win this event.
That being said, this is a reminder that there is significant variance in modern Jeopardy!, especially when it comes to Daily Doubles and Final Jeopardy, and there is always a very good chance for an upset.

The American city of Albuquerque, New Mexico, one of the major centers of the American Southwest, was named after the Spanish town of Alburquerque, located just north of Badajoz in western Spain, near the Spain–Portugal border. The American city gets its name due to the fact that the Viceroy of New Spain at its founding in 1706 was Francisco Fernández de la Cueva, the Duke of Alburquerque.

- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

A miss for me. I came up with the fabled Spanish city, Amarrillo. Hehe.
My first thought was Albuquerque, but I ditched it for Amarillo. I imagined that the name Albuquerque might have Aztec origins instead of Spanish.
Aw man! Sorry Lisa!
Guessed correctly only because it was the first four syllable name of a city in the southwest that came to me. I’ll thank Bugs Bunny for that.
Lol. I also associate Albuquerque with Ethel Mertz, who was from there, as was her alter ego Vivian Vance, who began here theatrical career there.
I’d forgotten those facts…wish I had neighbors like Fred and Ethel.
I said Albuquerque as well, with zero confidene, because like Mark0, it was the only city in the US Southwest I could think of with four sylables. Absolutely did not know that there was a similar spelled city in Spain (with, or, without the extra “r.”) Was figuratively floored when it was shown tobe the correct response.
If, as Andy predicts, the Jeopardy National College Championship returns as counter programing agains the Winter Olympics, does Ken host another prime time Jeopardy program, would they invite Mayim Bialik back to host, or find somebody else to host, like they did with Colin Jost for Pop Culture Jeopardy?
Thinking that California could be considered part of the Southwest for obfuscation, I spent too much time tuning out the 3-syllable Monterey/Monterrey pair which immediately came to mind.
Four-syllable Spanish-named city in the Southwest? The first name that came to mind, immediately, was Albuquerque, and all I had to do was count out the syllables for certainty. Then it was a question in my mind if the Spanish original was “Alburquerque” or “Albuquerrque”, which I knew would be answered by Andy.
Exact same here Katerina!
Four syllable city in the Southwest, Albuquerque immediately came to mind. For me, I think it was thanks to “Better Call Saul.”
I think “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” are why Albuquerque is what came to my mind first, too, though I used to have a relative who lived in Truth or Consequences, NM [since when it was still named Hot Springs].
🙂 Great TV created by Vince Gilligan!
Yes, I immediately blurted out Albuquerque and counted the syllables just to be certain. And yes, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul was definitely the impetus for my blurt out! Great shows huh Robert? 🙂
Kind of surprised that only Jackie was choosing clues in Shakespeare. Seemed like prime real estate for a DD.
My father worked on the I Love Lucy show in the ’50s…Vivian Vance gifted him a pair of Native American beaded leather baby shoes when my younger brother was born. What a wonderful Gal was she !!
I immediately blurted out Albuquerque as mentioned above. An easy get for me and that’s rare, especially in a tournament such as this.
I had never seen Raymond play and he was most impressive. All 3 players were great tonight, as there were only 3 Triple Stumpers per the Jeopardy website’s Jeopardata.
Definitely quite the upset, since Troy was favored to take down the whole shibang.
Tomorrow night I get to see Roger Craig play for the 1st time. I have seen Maya and John play before and they are very good players! Looking forward to Friday and a great game of Jeopardy!
Jeff!
I too am excited to see Roger Craig play [and many others] for the first time as I am a relatively new viewer…
2022 as I was taking care of my Beloved mom in her last year as we watched together.
I’m very glad that you got to watch with your Beloved mom. 🙂 A great memory to have.
I also started watching every night starting in February of 2022.
Jeff! Thanks for the kind and compassionate words.
