Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, May 13, 2025

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the May 13, 2025, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Broadway Premieres) for Tuesday, May 13, 2025 (Season 41, Game 177):

To avoid licensing fees, this play used bits of “Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush” in place of the Disney tune that inspired its title

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Katie Tarara, a nonprofit comedy theater executive director from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Katie Tarara on Jeopardy!
Aaron Dmiszewicki, an attorney from Pompano Beach, Florida
Aaron Dmiszewicki on Jeopardy!
Andrew Jones, a graduate student from Queens, New York (1-day total: $5,600)
Andrew Jones on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

After a difficult game yesterday that didn’t hit our players particularly well, Andrew Jones is our new champion. Today, he faces off against Aaron Dmiszewicki and Katie Tarara.

Let’s talk about yesterday’s game a little bit more. A category with the word “Jeoportmanteau” in it has now run 12 times, dating all the way back to 2004. The category isn’t going anywhere. Just because it didn’t play well with the players in the studio doesn’t make it a bad category. Some players just aren’t good at wordplay—I went 4 for 5 in the category at home. You don’t see me calling for the de-emphasis of literature categories because I was a poor literature player in quiz bowl and for fewer movie clues because film was my worst category in “trash” tournaments. Wordplay is an equally important part of the Jeopardy! canon as sports—it just can’t be studied as well by memorizing J! Archive—and so a small minority of fans want to see it given the Old Yeller treatment. (And the tabloid clickbait media is happy to play along and amplify it, because outrage drives clicks.) This is also a reminder that the outrage machine is mostly driven by people who were never able to live out their dream of being a contestant on the show, and are choosing to take their frustrations at not being cast out by complaining about the show on a nightly basis.

A cross between literature/theatre and film? How dare Jeopardy! put such an abomination into my favorite television program! Get this absolute filth off my television screen! (For those readers here for whom identifying sarcasm is more difficult, I point you in the direction of my Pregame Thoughts.)

Okay, now, more seriously: Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is a famous 1960s play by Edward Albee, whose title was taken from the Disney song “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf” from 1933’s Three Little Pigs. Martha and George, the two main characters, sing a version of the Disney song, replacing “Big Bad” with Virginia. However, many stagings replace the song with “Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush” due to its similar meter and public domain status.

This is the sort of Final Jeopardy clue that I think I’d like to see more of, though: it’s an interesting way of asking about a topic that the show has asked about numerous times.

  1. Having seen this play performed live a few times, I got this clue immediately; but I don’t think I’ve ever encountered the “Mulberry Bush” variation. Perhaps a community theater would be more concerned about the licensing fee.

    • For me, that’s why I didn’t get it; I have never seen a Mulberry Bush variation. Plus, if it’s a small snippet, Fair Use comes into play. Heck, I think even the movie used the real song.

  2. I don’t know about others, but just because I don’t “get” a category, I don’t call it unfair.
In a bit of irony, as I scrolled through this site, I noted an ad for Dell.
Like WWORDuke, I didn’t have the correct response to this Final either. Thinking that the answer clue referred to something recent, I went with “What is Wicked?, although I could see what Mulberry Bush had to do with it.

All you needed was to have seen the play one time and you’d be able to get this final, in my opinion. Sort of thought the theater person might get it but was happy to see, at least, one contestant got it.

Can’t really see any situation where the person in the lead would risk it all, unless they were James Holzhauer. Can anyone explain when it might be appropriate for the leader to risk it all other than in a tie situation? Congratulations to Andrew, though, it worked out for him.

    • Hi Robert,

I’ll chime in. There were actually no bets that Andrew could make that would keep 1 of the 2 opponents locked out, so I guess that’s why he did it. I was surprised as well until I looked at the scores entering FJ again and saw his options and there was no difference in a cover bet and in all in bet, based on what he probably expected his opponents to bet. Just my 2 cents. 🙂

  4. I had no idea on FJ tonight. Oh well!

Retro congrats to Andew on win #2! Will he get #3 tomorrow? Can’t wait to see and then watch Jeopardy Masters at 9 p.m. Pacific.

The two good things about Jeoportmanteau are 1) it’s not used as much as Before & After and therefore 2) I don’t groan audibly as I do when Before & After is revealed as a category.
