Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, May 14, 2025

Jeopardy! Masters continues tonight! My recaps of Game 1 (Victoria Groce, Matt Amodio, Adriana Harmeyer) and Game 2 (Neilesh Vinjamuri, Juveria Zagreb, Brad Rutter) are also available here at The Jeopardy! Fan.

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the May 14, 2025, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category South American Cities) for Wednesday, May 14, 2025 (Season 41, Game 178):

GPS technology has determined that a popular monument near this capital was built about 800 feet too far to the south

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Brandon Monsman, a bartender originally from Cleveland, Ohio
Brandon Monsman on Jeopardy!
Jen Johnson, a communications manager from Timonium, Maryland
Jen Johnson on Jeopardy!
Andrew Jones, a graduate student from Queens, New York (2-day total: $26,400)
Andrew Jones on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Andrew Jones is a 2-day champion; however, his winnings are currently just $26,400. With winnings that low, his best chance of postseason qualification right now will likely come if there’s a change in field size between the 2025 and 2026 postseasons. Today, he goes for a very important third victory against bartender Brandon Monsman and communications manager Jen Johnson.

Tonight is also a crucial episode in terms of Jeopardy! Masters, airing on ABC and CTV2 at 9:00 Eastern—three players will be going home. The third-placed player in the match between Victoria Groce, Matt Amodio, and Adriana Harmeyer will be eliminated, while only the winner between Brad Rutter, Juveria Zaheer, and Neilesh Vinjamuri will advance.

There’s a definite advantage on this clue to having been a longtime reader of The Jeopardy! Fan: On April 14, 2020, on a Final Jeopardy clue about Ecuador, I wrote specifically about this phenomenon, stating that the issue with the heavily-promoted Mitad del Mundo monument not actually being on the Equator was the result of a French surveying error. Mitad del Mundo was built as a result of the first Geodesic Mission of the French Academy of Sciences in 1736, which placed the Equator about 240 meters (790 feet) south of its true location. Interestingly, prior civilizations in the era were able to successfully find the Equator–the Catequilla ruins in the area were placed in the proper equatorial location.

Obviously, having written about this exact phenomenon before, this was a very easy Final for me; otherwise, barring actually knowing about this, I think the best way in is to ask the question, “Why would it matter if something is about 800 feet too far south?”—which would hopefully then bring you to the correct response.

9 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, May 14, 2025"

  1. I should have gotten this, but I did not. When I think of Quito I think of ‘the national capital with the second highest elevation’.

  2. Carmen strikes again! I was, and still am, a huge fan of the PBS Carmen Sandiego game show (Greg Lee for Celebrity Jeopardy). The Mitad del Mundo is one of the objects the gang stole during the five-season run!

  3. That was straightforward. “What monuments are expected to have exact positioning per GPS? Those denoting specific latitudes or longitudes. What do we have in South America? … Equator -> Ecuador -> Quito”

  4. I know it wasn’t in the wagering suggestions, but I’d be interested Andy in your thoughts on the $1,999 wager. It does seem to cover a triple stumper but it also seems like you cut your odds of winning significantly.

    • MY guess is it guards against Jen wagering zero playing for the triple stumper.

  5. I’m not sure how I did it, but after today’s answer clue was revealed, I blinked and said “What is Quito?” Maybe like WWORDuke it came from watching “Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?” Or, maybe from a semester of World Geography Freshman year in High School (oh so many years ago.) Don’t know, don’t really care. Just glad I had the correct response.

    • Do you watch travel shows on PBS? There have been many for a long time so perhaps you saw it on one of those. Joseph Rosendo now has a new PBS travel show called Steppin’ Out which aired a Quito episode on April 1st this year but I do not know if it mentioned this monument as I did not see that one. I guess you would have remembered how you heard of it if it was so recently, so probably not that way.

  6. Was the Colombia/Panama clue supposed to be “unread”, not “on read”?

    • No. “On read” is current slang, in reference to read receipts sent on most modern instant messaging platforms, signifying that the other person has read the message but chosen not to reply.
