Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, July 2, 2025

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the July 2, 2025, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Men of Medicine) for Wednesday, July 2, 2025 (Season 41, Game 213):

He told of a patient who “took hold of his wife’s head, tried to lift it off, to put it on”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Jeff Foels, a stay-at-home dad from Minneapolis, Minnesota
Jeff Foels on Jeopardy!
Stephanie Yang, a children’s book designer from Queens, New York
Stephanie Yang on Jeopardy!
Jason Singer, a real estate agent from Portland, Maine (1-day total: $22,401)
Jason Singer on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

We haven’t had a multi-day champion on Jeopardy! since mid-June; the show has made a point of mentioning that this current run of one-day champions ties the record set back in 2002. Jason Singer won on yesterday’s program; your challengers today are Stephanie Yang of Queens and Jeff Foels of Minneapolis.

Unfortunately, Jason’s victory has been marred significantly, in my opinion, by the apparent local insistence that he is the second half of the first married couple to win on the show. I would like to reiterate that in spite of the fact that the show has, according to what local articles have claimed, not tracked such matters in the past, that Jason is not part of the first pair of contestants to hold this title, and that local claims to the contrary are incorrect and quite off-putting. The fact that the Portland Press-Herald has elected to essentially double down on their claims and ignore multiple subject matter experts on this front has been quite upsetting here as well. It is quite telling that nearly every other news and tabloid outlet, including TV Insider, has updated their coverage when presented with the evidence. The contestant alumni community, over the past 48 hours, has now presented at least four other cases of this happenstance; I would implore Jason to set the record straight, at least locally.

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2025 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Oliver Sacks was a British neuroscientist who became well known from the 1960s onwards as a nonfiction writer, writing about his case studies of people with neurological disorders. His treatment of survivors of the encephalitis lethargica (sleeping sickness) epidemic of the 1920s became the basis of the book (and later film) Awakenings, while today’s Final Jeopardy clue makes direct reference to his work The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat (which was adapted into a one-act opera by Michael Nyman). That work’s title comes from a man with visual agnosia, unable to recognize faces or objects whatsoever.

Looking back at J! Archive, asking for Oliver Sacks has traditionally been a bottom-row clue on the show. He’s also been successfully named by contestants. With that in mind, while I can’t argue that this clue is out of place in regular play, I also think that this would have also been an excellent Final Jeopardy clue for a Tournament of Champions quarterfinal.

Jeff found the Daily Doubles on back-to-back clues; he split them for a net $0. Late in the round, Jason made a pair of phrasing mistakes—both rebounded by Jeff—as the game was tied going into Final Jeopardy.

Both Jeff and Jason were correct in Final Jeopardy—heartbreakingly for Jeff, he took the conservative route in Final, as Jason’s aggressive all-in bet makes him a 2-day champion. He’ll go for win #3 tomorrow.

Tonight’s results:

Stephanie $4,800 – $0 = $4,800 (Who is Dr Do)
Jeff $13,200 + $3,599 = $16,799 (Who is Oliver Sacks? Love to all!)

  • I would hope that this game situation means that Jeff vaults to the top of the Second Chance list. But there are so many strong candidates this time out.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Jason $13,200 Jeff $13,200 Stephanie $4,800)

Jason: Your two best options are everything or nothing (though $3,599 is a very close third.) (Actual bet: $13,200)

Stephanie: $0 is probably your best choice here—you probably have to hope for a Triple Stumper. (Actual bet: $0)

Jeff: Your two best options are everything or nothing (though $3,599 is a very close third.) (Actual bet: $3,599)

  1. Having no clue, I guessed Jarvik knowing he’d created an artificial heart that maybe he’d done other stuff, too.

  2. Put it this way: once you hear about the title The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, it’s kind of hard to forget.

Thankfully, spelling is not strict — I thought it was “Sachs” and not “Sacks” — so I can call this a get. I’m pretty sure this won’t go TS, but fingers crossed.

    • Robert J. Fawkes | July 2, 2025 at 7:11 pm |

Exactly this. The title really piques one’s curiosity. That helped me to remember the author. Not sure how someone put two c’s in “Sachs” but that spelling passed muster so I’m sure “Sachs” would also be acceptable.

  3. Dr Frankenstein was my only guess

    • Today was one of those days I read the question, immediately knew I couldn’t get it, and went down for the fun Andy facts.

  4. I have read the book, but I could not remember the author’s name within 30 seconds.

    • I was also pretty sure that it was the author of The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat, but also could not remember his name. Since I couldn’t remember the name, I would probably have just guessed Sigmund Freud even though it was not really a psychological problem.

  5. Thomas G. | July 2, 2025 at 1:26 pm |

Finally, a two day champion in Jason. Great.

  6. Congratulations, Jason!

  7. Not to take anything away from Jason, but I was rooting for the stay-at-home dad, Jeff. (Minnesota nice.)

  8. Robert J. Fawkes | July 2, 2025 at 7:18 pm |

Interesting coincidence that the father of a 3- and 6-year-old was on the same episode as a children’s book designer were on the same episode.

Not sure if this is allowable or not but I have a recommendation for anyone who is interested in children’s books. Amazon has a book called “Olly the Oriole in Learning to Fly” by someone I know by the name of Steven Lima. The book can be found on Amazon by searching on the title or the author’s name. The book is a lesson in overcoming one’s fears as the parents of Olly help him overcome his fear of flying for the first time. The illustrations are really cute, too. Hope this is okay, Andy, but I’ll understand if it’s not.

  9. Question:Why is Ken calling time and not the buzzer?

  10. Michael+R | July 2, 2025 at 11:00 pm |

I propose a simple solution/rule change too “commentary” added to FJ responses.
Players must ONLY give a response to the clue, period! Any shoutout, fluffery, coded BS, etc, will deem the response incorrect, ie, Instant DQ.
Take this “bringbacksusan” brouhaha…imho, this matter should be lobbied from personal social media, not the FJ screen.

    • Enos Williams | July 3, 2025 at 12:13 am |

This comes up every once in a while, but back in the dark ages, we were explicitly told not to write anything extraneous on FJ. That “rule” has obviously been loosened over the years.

  11. Re: “the show has made a point of mentioning that this current run of one-day champions ties the record set back in 2002″… Andy, could you please double-check the show?
