Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, August 21, 2025

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the August 21, 2025, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that today’s game is an encore presentation of the game that originally aired on February 20, 2025.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category The Southwest) for Thursday, August 21, 2025 (Season 41, Game 119):

The 4-syllable name of this city is almost identical to its namesake town in Spain, except that the Spanish one has an extra “R”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Jackie Kelly, a developer originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Jackie Kelly on Jeopardy!
Troy Meyer, a music executive originally from Cleveland, Ohio
Troy Meyer on Jeopardy!
Raymond Goslow, a library technology consultant from Marietta, Georgia
Raymond Goslow on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

The Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament encore presentations continue today with quarterfinal #4 between Raymond Goslow, Jackie Kelly, and Troy Meyer. Here’s what I said back in February: “Raymond finished second to Jaskaran Singh in the primetime college tournament held on ABC back in 2022 after having a strong tournament, while Jackie Kelly was a 4-time champion in Season 38 who was competitive in the 30th Tournament of Champions. Our third player in this game, though, is a player that a lot of fans think will go far in this tournament—Troy Meyer. He was a 6-time champion who reached the finals of the 31st Tournament of Champions before falling to Yogesh Raut in the final. The Unified Prediction Model also has Troy as the favorite to win this event. That being said, this is a reminder that there is significant variance in modern Jeopardy!, especially when it comes to Daily Doubles and Final Jeopardy, and there is always a very good chance for an upset.”

The American city of Albuquerque, New Mexico, one of the major centers of the American Southwest, was named after the Spanish town of Alburquerque, located just north of Badajoz in western Spain, near the Spain–Portugal border. The American city gets its name due to the fact that the Viceroy of New Spain at its founding in 1706 was Francisco Fernández de la Cueva, the Duke of Alburquerque.

1 Comment on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, August 21, 2025"

  1. Four major thoughts about this game…

1: I’m not surprised in the slightest at the quality of play in this quarterfinal – Raymond, Troy, and Jackie are each MUCH better players than I think their original success really shows (even Troy), so I had a feeling this would be the best-played three-way match of the quarterfinals. Glad to see my intuition was correct!

2: Major props to Raymond for not just an absolutely excellent victory today, but for his near-victory in his semifinal – getting Coryats upward of $20K against both one of the strongest quizzers on the continent and a future second-place finisher in Masters is just amazing, and I’m honestly a little surprised that (as far as I know) he wasn’t considered as a Masters alternate. I’ll go out on a limb and say that, had Raymond been a regular-play contestant with his skill now, Scott Riccardi would’ve been crowned the 19th double-digit winner instead of the 18th… but we’ll never know for sure, now, will we? 🙂

3: Still, watching this again kind of hurts me, mostly for Troy. Watching him in this tournament as well as the ToC finals, it’s obvious (at least to me) just how badly he wanted that spot in Masters, but after that incredible $21K DD wager in game 2 of the finals, he just seemingly couldn’t catch a break again. I can say with full confidence that Troy would likely be running circles around 25 of the 26 other players (maybe Luigi de Guzman could have given him some competition?) in this tournament if this was just a knowledge test, but he just couldn’t find a rhythm with the buzzer (which wasn’t helped by Raymond being lightning fast) and the only DD he could find was the one that ultimately has the least impact on the game on average. I’m confident that we haven’t seen the last of Troy on the Alex Trebek Stage yet, but still, I really wish this tournament worked out for him better than it did.

4: Jackie is definitely someone I’d watch out for if I was against her in future tournaments, and I have a feeling she’s probably the biggest example of a sleeper pick in this entire field; yes, she technically only won four games, but once she got the hang of the buzzer in game three, it took very bad luck with wagering clues to finally bring her down. I’m not at all surprised to see her do as well as she did in both ToC and JIT (even if she finished third in both matches), and I have a feeling we haven’t seen the last of her on the Alex Trebek Stage, either!
