We may have lost Alex, but the show must go on. Alex wouldn’t want it any other way. Please, let’s remember him over the next few weeks of banked episodes, and then afford him the same respect to his successors that we afforded Alex when he replaced Art Fleming in 1984. Alex’s last episode airs Friday, January 8, 2021; Ken Jennings’ first episode as guest host airs on January 11.
Today’s contestants:
Jeffrey Williams, a television editor originally from Detroit, Michigan![]() |
Valerie Castelo, a career counselor from San Leandro, California![]() |
Kate Freeman, a financial analyst originally from Lake Orion, Michigan (1-day total: $5,599)![]() |
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to abide by physical distancing guidelines and when you are not able to do so, properly wear a mask. Ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

The very well-known design of the Sydney Opera House is a favorite topic of the Jeopardy! writers (as evidenced by this Final Jeopardy! from last season that caused Jason Zuffranieri’s defeat.) Jørn Utzon, the original architect, resigned after the New South Wales government changed; the new government was hostile towards Utzon and the project. Utzon did agree to design updates to the interior many years later, but never returned to Australia and never saw the finished design in person. The Sydney Opera House was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- I’ve been asked in this section to be kinder to contestants regarding their in-game strategic choices. That said, I also think $10,000 would have been a better choice for Kate than $8,000 on the final Daily Double (as, in my opinion, it was her best chance of holding a lead going into Final, while still keeping her around for Final if she was incorrect). Obviously, the point was moot with how Final Jeopardy! turned out.
- Today’s game ends a streak of 16 consecutive games where all clues were revealed.

Admin note: We are in the middle of a major pandemic. Continuously asking when unannounced events may be happening is particularly inappropriate in these times. They will happen if and when they are announced.
I would not calling just asking ONE question “continuously”.
At least three game threads a week are being populated by these questions.
Not by me though and I don’t check every day.
Zach’s photo is permanently placed where everyone sees it daily. His current winnings, in just one more game, could easily exceed that challenging $100k level. Of course people want to know when he will return. Why not post, directly below his photo, something like “Zach’s return date to Jeopardy remains unknown. We will announce any new information as it is received.”
Exactly. And evenly important it would be his fifth win !
It would help a lot if you knew that Sutherland was born in Sydney…..
Not knowing that, I thought “concert venue with 1970s architecture” and Sydney Opera House was the first thing I pictured. So it would’ve been helpful confirmation but I think a couple of them may get this by guessing.
I like reading about betting strategy here and do not think you have been harsh about it. I feel so few players consider strategy when betting DDs or FJ. Learning that is as important as opera, presidents and world capitals. So often it seems players give up and are meekly betting for second (or third) place.
Congratulations to yet another new champion. Deservedly so! At least we did not start the week with a triple miss.
Most of this episode got preempted in many Eastern/Central markets by a news special on Biden winning his electoral college vote.
Other than that, there wasn’t too much to miss.
