Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category State Songs) for Wednesday, November 27, 2024 (Season 41, Game 58):
Its 15 official state songs include 2 that mention moonshine & 3 played in 3/4 time
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Julia Schan, a stay at home mom from Pleasanton, California![]() |
Drew Wheeler, a high school social studies teacher from Athens, Georgia![]() |
Kevin Laskowski, an Episcopal priest from Falls Church, Virginia (2-day total: $39,400)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Kevin Laskowski will be making a postseason return to Jeopardy. The only question is what level of the postseason he’ll be returning to. A victory today will ensure that he qualifies for the Tournament of Champions. However, Drew Wheeler of Athens, Georgia and Julia Schan of Pleasanton, California will want to stop him.

Tennessee has many state songs, including “Tennessee Waltz”, “A Tennessee Bicentennial Rap: 1796–1996”,and most famously, “Rocky Top”. However, as of 2024, the state now has 15 state songs.
While the Internet only got around to reporting the addition of Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” as Tennessee’s 15th state song yesterday—this one as the official state holiday song of Tennessee—the law designating it as such was signed by Governor Bill Lee on April 16 of this year.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- Having to remember exact quotes from the KJV is probably too difficult for the show in 2024, especially considering that a literal Episcopal priest chose to “stay clam” and not risk getting the exact quotation incorrect.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Julia $8,600 Kevin $6,800 Drew $6,300)
Kevin: You can’t both cover Drew and win a Triple Stumper. Either go all in to force Julia to cover (at the very least, at least $5,801), or $2,201, covering Drew’s small range but still potentially winning on a Triple Stumper. (Actual bet: $6,799)
Drew: Because Kevin is in Stratton’s Dilemma, you have some options here. If you think Kevin will bet big, bet between $2,301 and $2,699. If you think Kevin will bet small, go all in. (Actual bet: $2,400)
Julia: Standard cover bet over Kevin is $5,001. (Actual bet: $5,001)

My Station will air Jeopardy after local news according to local cable postings even though Matt’s schedule says it won’t air at all. That being said, as with all Sports–sometimes the games run long and interferes with the planned Jeopardy air time.
Katherine, what station is this and where? I’ll look again at the schedule and update the list if new information has come in since I initially compiled the information on Monday.
The FJ round was about as easy as they get! I immediately thought of Rocky Top and Tennessee Waltz.
Tennessee was a lucky guess for me. Moonshine suggested Kentucky, Tennessee, or North Carolina; and I chose the one in the middle. The 3/4-time should have suggested a waltz, but I was hung up on the moonshine part of the clue.
Regarding Quoting the KJV, is it too tough? I’ve thought the same thing about Oscars. Or Shakespeare. Or cable tv sitcoms from the 80’s. Or like yesterday’s question about a Supreme Court Justice chosen in 1916.
But, that’s what Jeopardy is all about.
Perhaps Father Kevin hasn’t studied enough?
The difference between your other suggestions and the KJV is that there aren’t a dozen other translations in more common use—one of which is likely what Kevin uses on a daily basis. To suggest he hasn’t studied enough is offensive.
Exactly what I was thinking, Andy. There are so many different translations of the Bible, you could get a quotation correct from one version but be significantly off in another version. KJV is just one of so many these days.
There are alot of different translations of the Bible. To get the actual quote right is rather hard. KJV uses old english style of reading and is the hardest to understand… therefore I avoid reading it and barely touch it. KJV version is not the only version that exists. There’s like at least three different ones that I interchange, reading. KJV is the last bible I’d pick up.
I’m amazed Kevin could answer any of them accurately. Actually. So no I don’t think it’s lack of study. That was the issue.
What Andy and Gayle said was exactly what I had thought upon reading your comment, so it is not just a Jeopardy! expert who saw it that way.
If one knows right of hand that a waltz is played at 3/4 time, that should lead one to the Tennesee Waltz, the only waltz I can think of that might be a state song. Moonshine, might stereotypicAlly be in Kentucky, or, other southern states. 15 state songs in total, if one knows that statistic, or, saw the story about Rockin round the Christmas tree becoming number 15, that probably would have lead you to the correct response. I didn’t know any of this.
I initially guessed Tennessee, but switched to Kentucky. I know waltzes are in 3/4, but I should have focused on that, rather than the “moonshine.”
When I think of who might have multiple songs, I think of Nashville, “Music City” and the capital of country music. That leads directly to Tennessee, the state where Nashville is located.
My logic also. Recalled “Tennessee Whiskey” but that is not one of the fifteen songs. Bob
That is the best tactic if one does not have “insider information” (i.e., being FROM Tennessee). I was not aware we had 15 state songs, but I was aware that we had more than one, recently added “Rockin’ Round the Christmas Tree”, and that our State Song Prime is “Tennessee Waltz” and that all waltzes are in 3/4 time [one of the few musical/dancing technical(?) facts I know] so I immediately got FJ correct. I also did not KNOW about the moonshine thing, but if I had run across a true/false or multiple-choice question concerning that, I would have picked an answer based on an assumption that more than one Tennessee state song mentions moonshine. “Tennessee Waltz” used to be VERY well known, but I’d guess now not-so-much. Surely I’d remember it anyway, but I do especially since it was one of the few songs my mother could play on the piano from memory.
Moonshine and 3/4 time. Had to be Tennessee
I was stuck on the moonshine and knowing that a lot of early NASCAR drivers ran shine before the advent of NASCAR and still while racing NASCAR, I went with North Carolina due to it being the state that NASCAR was and is still predominant in. Oh well.
0 for 3 for the week and 7 for 58 for the season.
