Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category British Novels) for Friday, June 9, 2023 (Season 39, Game 195):
Midway through this 1928 novel, the title character briefly takes “their” instead of his or her
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Tim Hagood, a communications consultant from Washington, D.C.![]() |
Vickie Cyr, a retired postmaster from Minneapolis, Minnesota![]() |
Suresh Krishnan, a networking engineer from Suwanee, Georgia (3-day total: $38,199)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Suresh Krishnan, as much as his statistics don’t match up well with some other recent champions, has absolutely taken full advantage of any opportunities he’s been provided to win, and is absolutely deserving of his three wins on Jeopardy! Today, he goes for win #4 against Vickie Cyr and Tim Hagood. (And, might I remind everyone: The point of this game is to win. It’s not to pick up a high Coryat or a high number of correct responses. The point of the game is to win, and Suresh is absolutely doing that.)
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Are you afraid of Virginia Woolf’s Orlando? You shouldn’t be. The work, said to be written as a lengthy love-letter to fellow novelist Vita Sackville-West after Woolf’s own relationship with Sackville-West in the mid-1920s, features the transition of the genderfluid title character; the most interesting part is touched on in the clue; it’s a rare early 20th century use of a singular “they” pronoun.
Joanna Scutts’s 2018 review for Vulture, “Orlando Is the Virginia Woolf Novel We Need Right Now”, is an excellent description and read.
Oh, and one further thing: I know there are bigots in today’s society who are going to take issue with the subject matter of tonight’s Final Jeopardy clue. If you have a problem with a 95-year-old novel, your bigotry is not welcome here, and the show and its fan community will be better off without you.

When the “answer” was revealed, I literaly threw up my hands, and, said “Whatm is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?” But since the answer refered to using “his” and “her” knew immediately I was wrong.
Andy, your thought about this book becoming a point of controversey by some, is well taken. I predict by Monday the latest, one US based tabloid style website, will make it some sort of click bait headline/story.
